Have you ever crafted a compass to find your way home, only to discover that it points to your original spawn? With these changes, you'll never have to worry about that again!
IRON BLOCK COMPASS
The direction that a compass points in could be modified using Iron Blocks. By right clicking on an iron block with a compass, the compass would point towards that block. This could be used to mark your home, portal in the Nether or End (the compass would still point towards iron there), or stronghold.
COMPASS NEEDLE
The compass needle is required to craft a compass.
COMPASS BASE The current compass crafting recipe makes the compass base that is required to craft a compass.
COMPASS The normal compass is now crafted like this:
With the torch being replaced by the compass needle.
BED COMPASS
The bed compass is a compass that points to the compass bed. It is crafted like this:
COMPASS ATTRACTING BED
To create a bed that bedcompasses will point to, you need to craft it like this. Only one of these beds can be placed per player on a world, and their bed compasses will point to it.
Note: wool colors can be changed
COLORED COMPASS
Colored compasses would work like this:
1. Craft a compass
2. Dye it by crafting it with a dye
3. Any compass of the same color points towards the same iron block, allowing for more than one direction using compasses.
If you do this, you could have the red compass pointing to your house, and a green compass pointing somewhere else entirely.
I like the option of a compass pointing to a bed. This might be a good option becuase people have been wanting the compass to point to the bed for a long time.
I like the idea of a compass needle.

My dad and I learned the hard way about the way compasses point a few months back, and I thought there should be a way to get compasses to point at beds.

I agree 100% that there should be a way that compasses point to the last bed used. Sometimes where you spawn isn't where you build your first structure. I built a system of roads in my map that stretch for kilometers to get around current compass limitations. As long as you follow the compass you run into a road somewhere. Still, I wish there was some better way to navigate like a placeable beacons that show up as arrows on the horizon or some such. Sorry, didn't mean to hijack your post.

Freedom is more important than health, more important than safety or security. A life's worth is not measured by its length but by the length it is lived with liberty. Freedom above all.

I think that the new beacon blocks probably should add a map marker.

At the risk of being that guy complaining about things being too easy...
"Getting lost can be frustrating but it also feels like part of the challenge/cost of exploring.
Given that everything's square and you can easily detect the motion of the sun and moon there's no point in a compass that points "north". The next "best" thing is a compass that is anchored to an arbitrary point and that might as well be the original spawn. Using the sky and a compass you can figure out where you are on a circle centered at your original spawn. A really clever play might also figure out an approximate distance based on the speed of movement of the compass relative to his own speed.
In other words, a compass that points to your most recent spawn feels overly easy. It would nerf navigation.
Besides, when/if you open your game up to other players you'll want to be able to find the original spawn point!"

As I said in the OP, the compass will not point there unless you make it. Completely optional feature. Plus, multicolored compasses allow for a compass to point towards your house, and another one to point towards your spawn.
Anyway, at least its more difficult the achieve than the other suggestions.
Also, remember that the compass crafting is now more difficult, and that the metal bed needs two iron blocks to craft.
I kind of like it. What if instead of crafting different compasses, you just right click any block with the existing compass and it points there until clicked on somthing else? This way it will point to spawn unless you decide otherwise and you could target a bed or chest or whatever you decide. No new crafting recipies and simplified for less confusion.
Also, while on the subject of the compass, any thoughts on a ender portal compass crafted from eye of ender? Throwing an eye in the air and watching it travel seems kind of.. I dunno, out of place. Or just make it so the ender eye "opens" or glows when you are facing the correct direction but closes when you are headed in the wrong direction. It'd still act as a compass.

I know, the reason I changed them was to help balance out the new power with the old recipe.

Then don't use a bed compass, use a normal one
Now back on topic, got my full support with this one =]

How do you designate which color compass points to what iron block? do you dye to block?
I feel the bed receipt uses way to much iron. There's no way I'm dumping blocks into that.
That makes sense
