In Minecraft - I have only played single player - I find that the scarcity and rarity of diamonds provides a great challenge and motivator to work diligently to locate them. It would be great if there were more uses for the hard-to-find resource to increase the necessity of obtaining some diamonds, and thus reward the player willing to put the effort into it.
To that end I propose the following 2 new tools that would be created only using diamonds. I am not saying that a hammer or chisel of stone or iron could not be made, or should not be allowed, but rather I simply mean that for the creation of a sculpture (shown below), only a diamond hammer and diamond chisel would fit that formula. That would make sculptures meaningful and more unique because not every player would be able to create them. A Mercedes is more valued than my Sentra because not everyone can afford to obtain it.
I have other potential uses for these two diamond tools, but the forum rules state only one idea per topic, so I will refrain from enumerating them all in this post. Please consider this idea seriously as I think there is enough easy to create items. Some more challenging items are needed to add depth (pun intended). I have no preference to the durability implementation, as to wether it is a one use tool, which again would make it a challenge to get multiple scupltures. It would also be cool to have some, if not all, of the sculptures be stone version of the various mobs, skeleton, zombie, etc.
Who wants to waste 3 diamonds for a Random Sculpture? No Support!
I appreciate your point, but as I noted, I have other suggestions that relate to those same diamond tools. The idea is to make them more diffcult to obtain than the readily available, and thus basically disposable, stone or iron tools. Sculptures just seemed to be an easy way to introduce them using a mechanism (random art and tools) already that has a supported mechanism in place.
Maybe you mihgt enjoy a diamond hammer that could be enchanted allowing you to throw it at a mob, ala Thor, and have it return. Not that I am suggesting that, per se, but you need to think long term. You have to start small and work up.
I like this idea a lot. As for the hammer and the chisel, in order to make them a little more long lasting, why not have them work for three uses? They can have a damage bar that is set to only go down when they are used in the crafting square, and can be left behind in the square, like buckets when you make a cake.
I do not know much about the complexity of adding durability to the tools. I do not have a preference really, other than to have this items added to the game. I really want to contribute at least one inspired idea to Minecraft. Whether this is that idea or not remains to be seen. :-)
I have created a mod or two in games in the past, although nothing involving creation of 3D textures or skins. I may, if I can tear myself away from actually playing the game, read some tutorials on modding Minecraft to see if it is something I could do. With the hundreds of suggestions out there, getting one actually onto the radar of Jeb seems pretty improbable.
The sculptures (statues) would be a nice addition to the game in general for asetics. Strongholds would benefit from having some statues of knights, or the "king" or even of zombies, creepers and the like. Like a trophy room. Statues, of course, are always associated with fancy gardens.
IRL diamonds don't break after hitting stone a few times. I'm thinking, say, 9001 uses?
Ah, but the weakest link is the wood handle, so one use could be explained in that fashion. Again, the idea is to make it a scarce item so that is has more value when you see a player who took the effort to create a sculpture. It also seems, to me at least, that the coding for a one use items is less work than tracking durability, and so forth. Maybe it is not.
I built a library and the only thing missing is some nice stone lions sitting out front. Or my tower of mayhem that is missing stone gargoyles at the corners. OK, so maybe not gargoyles, but stone zombies would be cool. You could make a nice museum for the art and sculptures. Or a "haunted house" ride with the minecart winding through it.
I like the esence of the idea, but the sculptures was better make with clay or sandstone useing a simple craft in the crafting table...
That would be making pottery, not sculptures. Classic sculptures are made from stone, plaster, etc. Clay makes pottery. Nowadays you can make shapes out of recycled junk and call it a sculpture. :-)
Again, the whole point of this mechanism is to make creating sculptures more difficult that dropping mud on the crafting table.

Me. And probably a lot of other people.
I support this idea! Diamonds need to live up to their rarity
