Hey everyone. Surprisingly, this hadn't been suggested before, and could still be some real use in minecraft.
After an update to maps that will come in 1.4, I would like to have a feature where we can edit, or rather, paint on maps. This way, especially with the extended maps in 1.4, we can put markers of where any important features are that aren't displayed on the map.
One bad side however is the editability, as a map is dynamic (kinda illogical?) and even changes once it's done. Also another feature that would have complication, but is certainly worth adding it, is multiplayer features, so it cannot be done with just paint at editting your Map_xx files. However, regarding the book and quill content in 1.3, it seems possible that player-editted items ARE possible. Perhaps this paint could be another layer above the dynamic map?
Still, aside the possible complication, this little update would really be usefull when having it implemented.
For some more clear view, let's add a list of Pro's and Con's for this implementation:
Pro's:
- Allows players to make markers without being forced to use mods covering this feature, or ruining the landscape.
- Very interesting feature as 'treasure map' or for directions in Adventure Maps.
Cons:
- Complication in a dynamic map may make it a challenge to implement, offered a 'layer' as solution.

It is probably useful for treasure maps and such.
