I have to say I like farming in Minecraft. Although I feel it could be improved.
First of all, I think the bread crafting recipe is unrealistic. After all, you craft it with raw wheat, never making it into flower. I think the first step in making bread would be to place the wheat into the crafting grid, which would make flower. Next, you would combine the flower with water on the crafting grid, creating dough. Then you would smelt the dough to create the bread.
Another thing I would like to see in Minecraft is rice. Rice would be similar to potatoes or carrots in the sense that they all only drop one item when destroyed, an item which is use to plant more of the same crop or to eat. The thing thats different between carrots (or potatoes) and rice is that rice must be placed within 2 blocks of water on tilled soil. To eat rice it must be combined with a bowl on the crafting grid the same way as mushroom stew. When eaten the rice in a bowl is replaced with a bowl the same way mushroom stew is.
I think corn would fit well into Minecraft. It would have the same requirements as wheat. Except that it would need 2 blocks to grow. When destroyed it would drop 2-5 corn on the cobs. Which could be eaten raw or put on the crafting grid to make 5 corn. Corn can be planted or combined with a bowl to make bowl of corn. The useful thing about corn is it quickly multiplies.
I think it would be cool if skeletons and zombies attacked farm animals, but farm animals would naturally breed to protect over the death of any one member of their race. Of course they would naturally breed only when there are few others in the area. And they would breed faster on hard vs peaceful.
After milking a cow you must wait 5 minuets before milking it again. This makes milking more realistic. With mooshrooms you must wait 5 minuets before milking them for stew or milk.
Another thing that would make farming more real is burning crops. When crops or anything else burns it should make ash. If ash is on top of tilled soil you can still plant crops through the ash, ash accelerates the growth of the next 5 crops. It could also be picked up with a shovel and placed again. In real life ash makes an excellent fertilizer. One time (in real life) lightning lit the grass of a nearby hill on fire it only took 2-3 months for the grass to grow back (most people predicted it would be a continuous eyesore for at least a year) and, when it did it was much greener then before.
My last idea is that dispensers should be able to turn upside down and when they are filled with seeds and shot on top of tilled soil it plants the seeds in the soil. This could help make a completely automatic farms.
this wouldn't be the whole game only the farming part if it, everything other than farming would still be a part of this game. after all, how do u get food without farming?
I mostly skimmed but I like all these ideas but the undead attacking animals. Burning crops would be nice but isn't profitable (in my opinion.) I think cakes should only take 1 milk bucket too.
