Mindflayers, possesion, levitation blocks, staffs, spell dust!!??? Oh my!
I think Minecraft should implement a--possibly for the snow regions?--Mindflayer bosses. The Shining Mindflayer would be able to use 'spells'--simply bolts of light or some sort of 'phantasmic' projectile that, upon striking the player, inflicts the effects of a potion on that player. When killed, it drops a 'levitation orb' or something of the like that can be crushed into 2 'levitation dust'. When the dust is mixed into a potion recipe, it become a 'levitation potion' that allows short-term flying. When the orb itself is mixed in a specific crafting recipe, it makes a 'levitation block' that acts as a 'gravity lift' or an 'elevator' when stepped on.
Second, another type of Mindflayer (Shadow Mindflayer) should be a second mob boss, and should appear in the ocean to make the ocean a lot less boring. This mindflayer, once it tracks you, will follow you everywhere, from land or not, and instead of having the ability to throw 'spells' at you (it still levitates), it 'posesses' other mobs--including neutral mobs--and forces them to attack you. When posessed, mobs don't burn in sunlight, have higher armor rating, have higher attack (and have an attack if they didn't before), and display dark 'cloud' particles around them as well as a scary noise. When the mob is killed, the clouds 'fly' in the direction of the nearby Mindflayer, revealing its position. When killed, the mindflayer drops a 'phantom orb' that can be thrown at any mob to 'posess' it. This would allow you to, per say, control a creeper and blow up in an enemy's hideout or control a skelly to shoot arrows at an enderman.
When both orbs are placed in the corners of the crafting table, with a stick in between, it creates a 'staff'. The staff, when placed in your inventory, can hurl 'spells' just like the Shining Mindflayer. When a potion is placed in the crafting table with glowstone, it can be broken down into 2-4 'spell dust' of that potion's type. To equip the spell, there are two options: One, you could put the staff in the crafting table with the 'spell dust' and it would become that type of staff until it runs out. The problem with that is that it would take extra work to make it recieve damage AND you would need a seperate staff ID for every potion type. The other option is to add a new apperel slot in the Inventory (next to the boots, chestplate, helmet and pants). Whenever a spell is cast, the spell dust is depleted by one.
This idea is interesting. I rather like it, to be honest. You are right about the issues, because having a seperate staff ID would be troublesome and bothersome. The possession part is what has me worried. How long would the possession last, for the player, and for the Shadow Mindflayer? Would the Shadow Mindflayer truly follow you forever? How would the passive mobs attack you, and how tough would they be? Does that mean that zombies would be alive in the daytime when they have always been programmed to burn once touched by the sun's rays? I think having the spell dust in a seperate slot would be easier then making a new ID for each staff, however, would the ability to fly last around 2~3 minutes? I like the Shining Mindflayer more then the Shadow Mindflayer, but both have their challenges. What would they look like, as well?
Sincerely,
Panda
Great idea, you should post the shadow mindflayer on the "Let's talk about improving Ocean Biomes" discussion, it could be a great idea although maybe you should think about nerfing the shadow mindflayer, seems a bit too overpowered. And following you everywhere until you kill it? How about following you until you reach the shore otherwise it would be a nuisance if you're not powerful enough to kill it. Aside from that this is a great suggestion.
