Ok, so I'm not clear... Lets try this again.
My idea is it would be nice to fill a map by crafting it with another map that is filled. that way you don't have to "discover" the same area every time you make a map. Yes, you can make copies of a map in the newest snapshot, BUT especially with the new huge map it's difficult to explore every block of a map.
On the Xbox should you and a friend want to explore the map, you can each take a map and go in opposite directions. When you meet up again one of you can simply hand your map to your friend, when you pic that map up any filled portion is transferred to both maps.
That was extremely convenient. It is the one thing I miss from the xbox version. But of course maps don't work that way on PC, and I don't think they can be expected to work exactly like that. So instead it would be nice to have a crafting recipe that would allow us to make two maps have the same areas discovered.
Example 1
You craft the largest map you can, and you explore a significant chunk of that map. Not all of it but MOST and you're so happy with your map... You make a copy of it so you don't have to worry about loosing it. Then off exploring again, and you get more of your map filled.
Now: you have to make a new copy of that map to get your updated map safe back at your base.... 4 iron, a red stone and a wad of paper totally wasted... It's not -huge- but it's a pain in your ass.
My suggestion: craft the two maps together, making it so both maps have the same areas exposed, your investment in a map saved at home isn't lost.
Example 2
So you got your -huge- map but you made this medium sized map near some villages and it's not on your huge map... Well, a little piece of it is... but there's more than half of the medium map missing out of the huge map.
Now: you have to whip out each size of map you have for an area and trek back across it to fill each map. Spending all that time you could be trading, farming, building or mining simply walking across the same area or going over it once having to flip through maps to be sure all of them are filled.
My suggestion: craft them together, you expose the space from the medium map on the large map, and vice versa simply by spending a bit of resources (the ink and quill) and get back to what you were doing, meaning so long as you have one master map, you can always have/fill maps.
Example 3
You didn't think you'd need the huge map. But now that you've got your whole medium map finished, you'd like to have a huge map. So you copy your map and turn one of them into a huge map.
Now: you get to run -all- back over every flippin square of that medium map to fill that huge map. ENJOY!
My suggestion: When you craft them together you now only have to expose the area you haven't already explored.
Problems:
I have no idea how this will effect the current way maps are made and filled. This may cause problems...
Crafting has only one output. Making having two different sized maps come out impossible.
Now... I am currently on the mend from being ill... Please let me know if something doesn't make sense. I'm a little addled and foggy. Same goes for if someone else has something similar. I searched but... Well... Hurp durp I'm sick.
You need to work on conveying ideas. I seriously, can not understand what you mean, the most I've been able to gather is that you want to be able to fill in an unfilled map by crafting it with a filled map.
Seeing as in your example you stated that you spawn in items, it is hard to take you seriously. Also, copying maps is already in the game (in 1.4).
Just saying.
Actually, unless this changed in the last snapshot or two... when you "copy" a map it just gives you a new blank map with the same origin point with the largest zoom. None of the filled in parts are copied.
And every time you "enlarge a map" it erases the filled in parts.

NNnnnooooooo... "spawn copies" of the map... As in Make a copy of the map. As in place a blank map in with an existing map.. and get two of that map. When I read the snapshot that introduced the ability to make multiples of a map they said "spawn copies"
If the language makes it confusing... Then I'll change it.
I know that Making exact copies of the maps is in the game, I was utilizing that new feature in my example...

Um... yea. thats only exactly what I mean. I know not everyone has played on xbox but thats how the maps work on there. being able to fill one map off of another even if it's already started would be nice.

They fixed that. Now when you copy a map it gives you two identical maps, including any discovered area. Though enlarging a map still gives you a totally blank slate.
Cleaaaarly I have not translated my idea well. Do I need to add pictures?
So map copying is fixed... but you want to take two partial maps and (craft?) them into two combined maps. Or should they automatically fill when both are in your inventory. I prefer the former.
Either would work really. On Xbox it's automatic when you pick up a new map, which was -damn- handy, all you had to do was toss your map at your friend and they would toss it back at you... then you both have everything you've both explored. But I suspect people will have a fit about auto filling maps for making adventure maps... But yea >.> I think it would do more good than bad being auto filling.
