Chains have four uses. I hate typing out things too long, because it feels like reading class...
CRAFTING: Chains should be crafted like this: It will return three chains.
USE 1: SPECIAL LADDERS. You can place them like fences, but up and down only. You can climb them too, so you dont need to build a giant cobblestone pillar, and then place the ladders on later. Breaking the top chain will cause the rest below it to fall, like vines. You will get the chains back though.
USE 2: LINKING MINECARTS. First off, I typed "Minecraft," 100 times before getting "Minecart," right. Anyways, right clicking on two minecarts front-to-back will link them together, so they won't move away from eachother. If the carts are more than a block away, they will not link. Click the front half of the cart to link it to the cart infront of it. Click the back half of the cart to link it to the one behind it.
USE 3: HANGS FOR TRAPS. Craft a chest out of chains to get two chain loops. Chain loops will cause a mob to get stuck in it, and start dying as slow as starving. it will kill players / mobs. To prevent it from being OP, it will break after two deaths.
USE 4: CHAINMAIL ARMOR. Crafted like any other armor, but with chains. (Chain IS weaker than iron, one and a half armor points off.)
Actually, some of the ideas are pretty cool. Not really necessary - ladders work fine and minecarts don't really need to be linked, but your ideas do make them more effective.
A new idea: craft four chains in a 2x2 square to make a chain curtain (probably needs a better name).
This chain curtain can be placed like vines. They are climbable like vines, but they also have another property: when hanging freely from a block, it stops projectiles.
I believe it was used IRL to stop bullets (or maybe just arrows?) but i'm not sure.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?

Ok, I see where your going, they could act similar to vines, except without growing (as previously stated). I support this!

My favorite idea, its clever and practical. More support!

Meh... you lost me here a bit. I don't really understand this, and it doesn't seem practical or useful/effective. No support
USE 4: CHAINMAIL ARMOR. Crafted like any other armor, but with chains. (Chain IS weaker than iron, one and a half armor points off.)
Of course, this would be the most obvious example. Support!
3/4, I support this. Its a great idea, incorporating chain mail into the game. But isn't chain mail craft able already? with fire?
Yes, i know that I guess i was trying to make the point that chain mail IS NOT legitimately possible in current vanilla
Well, it's not craftable, but you currently can trade for it. But I don't know about you, but I've never bought it. Just seems pointless. By the time I can afford / find a piece being sold, I have full iron armor and maybe some diamond armor pieces.

Very good and well thought out idea. The only problem is: Chain mail is weaker than iron and it is more expensive too. Surely there is someway to fix this?
EDIT: Never mind. I just remember you said that it yielded 3 chains. Good Job! Would love to see this implemented.
I like your suggestion, all except the trap. So a player can walk into it and simply die because it has no way out? Even if it only has 2 uses, it is still kind of broken. Maybe it can only trap mobs, and only deal around 5 hearts of damage to a player?

sorry; I use, way too much, 'punctuation', it's a habit...

Fire is impossible to get without the give command or inventory hacks. The idea is to make them legitimately craftable.

(If not obvious, I support this.)
Chainmail would be awesome because the armor/tool levels would match up
Leather - Wood
Gold - Gold
Chainmail - Stone
Iron - Iron
Diamond - Diamond
Well chain is worse than iron.
