This is really just a basic premise and not a fully formed idea, so I'm fully open to suggestions on how to spin it and what to do with it.
This could also be either a vanilla feature or a mod. Either one works, although I think it would work best as just one feature of a mod instead of an entire mod.
Anyway, here's the idea:
There's a mob which is a living suit of armor. I'm pretty sure it will be hostile. If you kill it, it drops the armor, which is a new set of wearable armor that gives some sort of status buff or something and can only be obtained by killing the living suit of armor. Maybe it also has a unique sword or some other unique weapon.
But you can also put the armor back together and spawn a tamed living armor mob which will fight for you or defend your base or something. As I said its not yet a fully formed idea. And if you don't want the mob anymore, you can kill it and get the armor back, which you can then put back together into a mob again if you so choose. (the justification for this being that the armor never actually died, it just fell apart and became immobilized, and when worn it will yields control to the wearer).
It might possibly have each wild suit of armor only drop one piece (the helmet OR the breastplate OR the leggings OR the boots OR the sword). Maybe it'll drop a complete set. Maybe it'll randomly drop anything from only one piece to a complete set. Either way, you'd need the complete set to build the tamed mob, and the tamed mob would always drop the complete set when you kill it.
I think that when not attacking or being attacked, it will always stand perfectly still in one place, and if its still in one piece at the end of a fight it will return to that place and start standing perfectly still again.
And if you're making a texture pack that includes it, but your texture pack is in a sci/fi setting instead of a fantasy one, you can just make it a robot that's also an exosuit or something.
I like parts of this idea. I like Golems in Minecraft, but I don't like the method for making them, it seems.. nonsensical. I really wish there were golem enemy mobs you could discover that would drop golem parts.. but heck, enemy mobs will soon be dropping heads, so maybe that's a step in the right direction? So, craftable ally you make out of enemy parts.. I'm behind that idea 110%.
Not sure about the wearing-as-armor aspect, though. I like the simple way that armors are now (moreso with the addition of dyes), and I feel like this would pull those ideas in an unnecessary and confusing direction.

I just thought that living suits of armor, which have appeared in a few fantasy films and games in the past, were a neat idea for a mob (which, being armor, really ought to be wearable), and it would be a neat way to combine two classes of things into something new.
