So I've been playing /indev/ a lot more recently do to the fact that I enjoy looking through this one map that I generated that has awesome caves in it. As I walk around, seeing all the coal and iron ores surround me, there's also something I've been noticing as well. I'm mostly outnumbered when it comes to packs of zombies coming around (5 or 6 of them appearing at the same time) and swords can't handle that high amount of zombies (especially skeletons, those bastards). The idea came to me when I was trasversing through my giant caves and found a giant pit of zombies under me, and across was a vein of gold that I wanted (gold is useless, yes, but I love making a golden axe for display, because it's bad-ass). I could nuke them with TNT, but it takes around 4 sacks of TNT to blow them to pieces, and it will only deepen the pit to the point where I can barely cross. So I thought up of an item that could be useful and could be crafted somewhat more easily.
It's a grenade, or otherwise named as a small bomb. This is a model on how it would like, except much more smaller (and maybe square). To give a proportion as to how big this is, imagine those small cubes that fall off whenever you break something, whether it's dirt or anything. Now imagine that black, approximately 2x bigger, and with a little string on the top that lights up, like how torches light up but smaller. That's pretty much the bomb I'm envisioning here.
To craft said bomb, there have been a couple of routes I've been thinking about, but the key is to keep them craft able in such a way where they're not incredibly easy to make, but you could still make a substantial amount of them if needed (always keeping 5 or 6 on your person). Here is a design I thought up on how to craft them, please keep in mind that adminstone = gunpowder, sand = string, and gold is used for spacing.
[gold] [gold]
[gold] [gold]
This would be the design that would make the most sense by far to me, but if you have any more designs, you can totally show them. The string, which is represented by sand here, would act as the small rope that leads to the gunpowder. This combination, when crafted, would lead the creation of 2 small bombs.
It's use is fairly simple: Mass damage in close combat when you're outnumbered. They could be thrown or laid down on the ground, and it explodes, damaging the closest thing around (even you if you're not careful). The diameter of the diameter of the damage can reach to 3 blocks cubed. Basically, it would be like this:
Only cubed. The obsidian is the damage, TNT the small bomb. This is extremely useful for close combat between big groups of skeletons, whether if it's inside or outside caves. The small bomb, however, cannot substitute TNT and never will, mostly because it cannot destroy blocks (and if I suggested if it did, the damage it would cause to blocks would be probably minimal, like 1 block exploding where the main explosion occurred). In comparison, the small bomb would explode much faster than normal TNT, giving the ability to apply more substantial damage quicker, and can cover small distances (if thrown, probably around 3 or 4 blocks distance. Maybe more, but that depends on the proportion of how far something can be thrown to the distance of what an actual person can throw). It wouldn't replace arrows either, because it's not a long distance weapon.
So yeah, here's your giant wall of text for the day, discuss on this idea, expand on it or reject it altogether.
I say go with single TNT sticks. Crafted with one gunpowder and one sand. They do about the damage radius you said, but without the corners. You can put 'em on arrows to make TNT arrows.
Possibly making a metal enclosed bomb, like this:
[iron]
[iron] [iron]
[iron]
(TNT being gunpowder, iron being iron ingots, obsidian being space)
gives you more damage, from the shrapnel, and the radius you said.

I think that there should be a difference to TNT and these in terms of its intention.
I think that TNT by itself should not get rid of any ore or blocks it destroys (i think it does that now).. and these weapons intended to do damage to creatures should get rid of ore or stone it destorys.. that why you may feel the need to not use them all the time.
Besides that.. and TNT is just sooo expensive to make.
I like the small TnT pipes idea, however adding to qwills I like Animator's idea for a string leading. Also the square that the main explosion occurred is destroyed, not mined/axed/punched so no benefit comes from this besides destruction. But when it comes to corners or small holes it should either destroy all walls/ceilings it's touching (only on the N,E,S,W and not the ones diagonal from it.) however I could see that becoming a nuisance. So having it do ONLY dmge would be fair. I could deal with both sides though in game.

We've already had the argument about TNT arrows, so I'll just point out that I still don't like it. I love the idea of single sticks of TNT we can throw, and can be stuck together to make the huge TNT block.

This may be a fad, but I love dragons, so why the heck not?
Meh, sounds too easy - find a cave, throw a few grenades inside, come in.
Killing monsters is not such a big challenge already, and Notch said that he'd rather make Minecraft too hard, not too easy.

That is why i suggested that the ones you throw destorys Ores.. so if you toss it at a diamond block its gone.
Oh, and what is the chance that you'll have to fight skeletons near the diamond vein? And after all the player could just lure monsters away from minerals and use the grenade after that. Of course, grenades are fun, booms, fire, smoke and all that, but it's not the weapons that make the game interesting.

So much more helpful than TNT, but without TNT becoming useless.
+1

It's not very damaging (2 hearts) but it's more for laughs. XD
And when you eat it it explodes and little bits of food and smoke fly every where.
