First of all, emerald should never be for anything other than trading. There's a reason you can't make anything out of currency in other games or real life.
I realised that maybe Emerald's sole function is good enough because of how currency works, so it's probably fine as it is.

This thought occurred to me when I browsed through the recent posts involving the upcoming 1.4 stuff. I know that mobs are great additions and all, but what concerns me overall are the ores.
Sure, there's the recent emerald ore, but I find its sole function to be rather dodgy: trading. Never mind its block form, as obviously they're either for decoration or compact storage in terms of other ores. I hope it gets another use in the future, otherwise the trading might as well have been done with gold instead. (Gold itself isn't really practical other than being quick but fast-exhausting tools and being part of the clock recipe) Lapis itself also has its charm for being just a decorative block, but I prefer it to have another use too .
Another interesting note is that the gap between the update that introduces lapis, the second most recent ore and 1.3.1 is a whopping 1 year and 7 months! For comparison, the update gap between redstone and diamond's, and the gap between lapis and redstone is about 5 months. The next-to-longest gap is the one between coal and diamond, which is about 9 months.
Other than the emerald, when I thought about this I focused on the game's name: Minecraft. It's a sandbox game that has survival aspects, exploration, fighting etc., but mining itself is a bit out of focus in terms of content size. I find it weird that Minecraft is not that much about mining, despite the title. Maybe it's just named after Infiniminer, the game Notch took inspiration from? Hopefully, there is a mod called TerraFirmaCraft, which focuses more on the landscape and resources around Minecraft (so many ores ).
So, what do you guys think with the current vanilla number of ores? Are they just right or do you think there is room for more? (If you really want to incorporate your own ore into the game don't forget that you can mod) Also, is it still appropriate to call Minecraft, Minecraft when it comes to the stuff you can do in it?
Either way, opinions from both sides are welcome .
I think that bugs should be at least worked on before considering new ores. One such bug is lighting and shadows. Although Jeb stated this would be addressed in 1.4, I have seen nothing of a correction yet.
Rather than ores, I would like to see a few new stone types so we could have more colors and textures for building. The first that comes to mind is brownstone which is prevalent in New England, USA.
Maybe, granite. You could craft that into marble. Everyone wants a granite counter in their kitchen, heheh
I just meant something above Diamond, especially considering how powerful the Wither seems to be.
And yeah, so long as they have uses I would like them added, but I don't think they should be if they are just pretty (unless maybe they are precious gems, but those could at least have some extra uses).
Personally I think we should have a tier that goes between Diamond and Iron, Maybe something like Obsidian Reinforced, or Diamond Edged tools.

If new ores are added, they shouldn't just be a new tool/sword/armour tier, they need to do something original.

No, there has never, ever been a sandbox game with a story or ending... except Grand Theft Auto... and Saints Row... and Red Dead Redemption... and Crack Down... and Assassins Creed...
Silver could be fun if it were reflective and craftable into a mirror. I could also see it having extra properties as a weapon,.+ small damage to undead tends to be a popular theme. If they ever made a werewolf mob this would be the go to hunting material.
I've also always wanted to see bronze and copper. Copper was a popular sculpting material back in the day and oxidizes into a very distinct blue-green color. A good example of this is the Statue of Liberty.
I also wrote a suggestion thread based on Lapis Lazuli and Marble as I love the look of a Lapis Lazuli floor, but would love more colors. Adding marble, granite, and gemstones to be craftable into Lapis Lazuli recolors was my solution. The link is in my sig if you wanna read more on that.
Personally. I'd like to find more ore and gems underground. I hardly have a reason to mine nowadays and I find variety to be a lot more fun, especially in crafting/mining games like this.

Stone types are fine too! Since stone is also part of mining, they could add other kinds of stone too to improve on it :D.

Yeah, they should focus on fixing the existing bugs first. However, in the future once almost everything is sorted out it doesn't hurt to include a new ore with unique functions.
Frankly I'm sick of people wanting more tool tier ore's.Anyone else can't stand more suggestions for emerald, obsidian and a tier between iron and diamond.Nothing should be more powerful than diamond and there should be a large gap between iron and diamond,Just my opinion.
Agreed. It occasionally ticks me off when a mod ore lacks functions other than being crafted into tools or armour.

As long as they don't drift off too much from mining, then it's fine :).

Gems: Sapphire, Ruby, Amethyst. All decorative.
Uranium: Cooks 100 faster than a bucket of lava.

Exactly! If Mojang decides to add in new ores they should have unique function of their own. (The emerald is a good start)

I guess so. Updated the OP about the emeralds.
