There are many kinds of games that rely on viewpoints other than the 1st person and 3rd person views Minecraft now supports. For example, side-scrollers have side views from a distance. And shooter games often have a top-down view. Minecraft would be improved if we could add these specialized viewpoints for challenge maps and arcade games.
I suggest adding a /viewpoint server command. This command would lock a target player's viewpoint into set distance relative to their body, staring back at themselves.
It would work like this:
/viewpoint <player> x y z
For example, /viewpoint Bill 0 15 0 would place Bill's viewpoint 15 meters in the air above his body, staring directly down at his head. Which way Bill faces wouldn't change the viewpoint, north would always be at the top of the screen for him, but as he moves the "camera" would follow him to always be 15 meters above his head.
/viewpoint Bill 20 0 0 would place the camera 20 meters east of his body, staring back at him. Perfect for a Mario style platformer!
You could also do things like /viewpoint Bil 12 10 0 to have a diagonal view, displaced on two different axis.
Negative numbers would also be supported. Want to stare at your feet through a glass floor for some reason? All right, that's weird, but why not: /viewpoint Bill 0 -15 0
And /viewpoint Bill default would unlock Bill's vision and return it to normal.
Adding this would make it possible to simulate all kinds of games in Minecraft. Platformers like mario. 2D brawlers like Street Fighter. Top down shooters, like Ikaruga, or top down RPG games like the original Zelda or Champions of Norrath, or close room battles like Smash TV or Binding of Isaac. Adding this one thing to the game would be like adding a dozen new game genres to challenge maps.
And of course command blocks could be used to have many different kinds of views in one adventure. You could play one area normally, then switch to side platformer view, then back.
if, on a side view, could you see underground, like a slice of caves and stuff? easy way to find caves...I really like this idea, though. Well thought out.
