To sum up my idea, when an item is in the crafting table's output slot, and no items are in the input slots, transparent images of the crafting recipe needed to create the item (If the item is craftable) show up in the input slots. If the player does not have the item(s) needed to create said item that they have placed in the output slot, the transparent image(s) can have a red hue to indicate that the player does not have any of that item.
It's not the most useful idea for veteran Minecraft players, but could still prove useful for players who need a little reminder of how to make a certain item that they have on hand. In my mind, this would be an intriguing way to implement "recipies" into the game.
edit: Also, there could be an item that you would have to collect in-game to enable reverse engineering. Maybe... you would need a Potion of Knowledge status effect... or something...
I certainly like this idea, but items cannot be placed in the output slot, making this useless. If anything, there should be a recipe book, or some sort of crafting log that shows recipes for previously crafted items.
As I was clicking on this, I was thinking that knowing the internet, you had no idea what reverse engineering is. I was pleasantly surprised, and this is a great idea! I've always thought there needs to be more ways for noobs to figure out how to craft things without wiki, and this is a great solution!

I also like this idea, I think that there should be a search button in the crafting where you can type in names like creative and the recipe shows
Yes, I think that it could be cool to have a recipe search function, but only after you have crafted the item before. (To encourage creativity with crafting and such.)

Yes, I looked up 360 crafting, and was surprised how similar the ideas were, yet mine is... slightly different. The Xbox version has VERY simplified crafting. (No mouse for the console users.)

What about items that have multiple crafting recipes?
White wool has upwards of 15 I think.
Possibly a scrolling type option (arrows on the side of the crafting table?) that can show you all of the methods of crafting the item that you desire. The table would show nothing for uncraftable items (saplings/grass/dirt/logs), and would not show all possble "orientations" on the crafting grid that can create the item (eg. sticks wouldn't have "6" different recipies...).
Why not in the Bonus Chest have a Written Boom with recipes?
I guess it's a bit easier but would aleviate veterans getting annoyed.
How would veterans get annoyed by this idea? You don't have to place items inside the output slot ever, so most veterans wouldn't even notice a change.
A written book you would have to dig through to find recipes, and it is very non-immersive. This idea is much better.
