As the thread's title suggest. This could be the niche ability that makes lanterns worthwhile seeing it would negate the need to dig all those skylights.
You mean so people can see what they're doing in the void?
First of all, I don't see why people would be spending a large amount of time in the void in the first place. And secondly, you can't place anything in the void, so how would you even use the lamps?

Void fog appears in the lowermost levels of the overworld. As in, right above the void, but not actually the void.
It's not a bad idea, anyway. I'd think that a more "magical" material would fit better, but we don't really have anything suitable, so redstone lamps it is, then.

Are you always so pessimistic?
Yes, yes I am. A pessimist is always either right, or pleasantly surprised.

Egads..this is World of Warcraft meets Battlefield 1942 in a dark alley with way too much to drink and no discarded mattress nearby.

Actually, I was thinking more of fog-cutting headlights or lanterns when I wrote this suggestion. It's nothing magical, just the way the lens is shaped...
It's not a bad idea, but I find when stripmining down at the bedrock, that torches seem to do a fair job of making things fairly bright. With 4 torches for every 1 coal and stick used to make them, it's pretty efficient in my book. Unless you don't care for the void particle effects and were hoping to get rid of them with your lantern?
Yesyesyesyesyesyesyesyessssss! Void fog is awful for large underground complexes. Having lanterns as a light source would make me happy as a young lemon.

Would you really rather have bees that make diamonds and oil with magical genetic blocks?
... did I really ask that?
I'm thinking the crafting recipe could look a little something like this;
Stuff are mostly there as placeholders. Redstone could always be replaced with a torch or something. The main idea is to keep it as simple as possible to craft.

IMO void fog should be removed; cool but just too annoying. I had an underground base that when void fog was added was unusable as hell.
I would love it if you checked out my "about me" page on my profile and looked at my threads
I'm always happy to see new posters.
