Dirt. It's everywhere! Well, apparently not for me. Might be some kind of OCD, but I can't stand the thought of tearing apart the landscape just to fix what the creepers already tore apart. We have so many farmable items in this game, yet the one I need the most because of these irritating, game-ruining creepers, just can't be reprduced. The same could be said for sand as well. Now how would one go about farming grass or even sand? I can't say. Maybe you guys could make up some suggestions. Regardless, this is somethinc that irks me constantly and don't feel I can completely enjoy the game without.
I'm not sure how this would go about either. Though I agree: building a large dirt mound? Sucks for you; go murder the terrain. Need sandstone? Sucks for you; go murder the terrain. Some method would be nice.

I would love it if you checked out my "about me" page on my profile and looked at my threads I'm always happy to see new posters.
Eh. I might be biased, here, but I'm not entirely sure I see a problem. While dirt/sand aren't renewable, it is literally everywhere; if you don't want to ruin the landscape, you might try getting some from the bottom of the ocean, perhaps? I can't imagine that you'll notice the blocks missing from down there.
Otherwise, a sort of "composting bin" block comes to mind for dirt; toss a bunch of organic items (chicken, bones, sugar cane...) into the GUI of the new block, and after it's received a certain amount/processed a certain amount of time, you'd be able to collect some dirt from it. A similar object comes to mind for sand, something like a "grinder," perhaps.

Are you always so pessimistic?
Yes, yes I am. A pessimist is always either right, or pleasantly surprised.

Egads..this is World of Warcraft meets Battlefield 1942 in a dark alley with way too much to drink and no discarded mattress nearby.
Because there isn't enough dirt to go around already. There is infinite world generation, therefore infinite dirt. You can just go really far away and get the dirt from there, or get it underground.
Since dirt generates in chunks, and chunks are infinite, Dirt can be considered a renewable resource.
If it's already a renewable resource, why farm it?

Well technically the world isn't infinite, but it's so large that it'd take up thousands, or perhaps tens of thousands of double chests, filled with dirt. I agree with what you say, though, dirt is easy to find in out of the way places.
My version of the sometimes suggested panning for gold (I don't have a topic of my own about it) involves panning primarily creating "junk" blocks like dirt, sand, and gravel. Other more valuable items can also be obtained, but the more valuable items are obviously more rarely produced.
I've also seen a suggestion for the composter block mentioned above. I liked that one somewhat.

If you get a basic block or idea, I'll come back

What's up? I'm the proud co-owner of a little ClassiCube server called Minebuild.

Sometimes, you just need a little more cave.
