An idea that i thought of while exploring a Stronghold.
What if there were these things called Ruins? They would be structures which are basically a bunch of blocks placed in a 10 x 10 area which are made to look like there used to be a structure there. There would be several variants. In the center of each one is a 2 x 4 x 4 area that leads underground, to a small maze. The maze itself is only 2 blocks high, and has a total length and width of 20 x 20. If the maze is navigated successfully, a large chest with 2 torches on either side would be in a room at the end. This chest would contain a few valuable materials, and many helpful ones. A table of rarity of every item that can be found in the chest is below.
VERY LIKELY
Wooden Planks
Sticks
LIKELY
Iron
Apple
Sugar Cane
Paper
Any Iron Armor
Iron Pickaxe
SOMETIMES
Any Iron Tool besides Pickaxe
Melon Seeds
Pumpkin Seeds
TNT
Gold
RARELY
Any kind of Golden Tools
Any Golden Armor
Diamonds
Golden Apple
Book
Lapis Lazuli
VERY RARELY
Emeralds
Any kind of Diamond Tools
Any kind of Diamond Armor
(More items could be added to the list of items that can be found in the chest.)
List of Types of Ruins
Stone Brick Ruins: Ruins made of Cracked Stone Brick, and Mossy Stone Brick, with a few bits of regular Stone Brick here and there. The floor/foundation would be made of either Mossy, Cracked and Regular stone brick, or possibly mossy and regular cobblestone. The maze would be made of Cracked and Regular Stone Brick. Stairs would be made of Stone Brick Stairs. Can appear in every biome except Deserts, Jungles and Ocean.
Desert Ruins: Ruins made of Regular and Smooth sandstone. The floor/foundation would be made of Regular Sandstone, with a few bits of sand here and there. The maze would be made entirely of Chiseled Sandstone, with a ceiling, floor and walls made of Smooth Sandstone. Stairs would be made of Sandstone Stairs. Can only appear in Desert Biomes.
Jungle Ruins: Ruins made entirely of Mossy and Regular Cobblestone, and Vines. The floor would be made of Mossy Cobblestone, with a few patches of Regular Cobblestone. The maze would be made entirely of Cobblestone. Stairs would be made of Cobblestone Stairs. Can only appear in Jungle Biomes.

Well we already have jungle and desert ruins, but I wouldn't mind some new kind with a randomly generated maze.
Well,
i'm not trying to be a jackass, but technically, those are temples. These would just be kind-of-destroyed-buildings-with-mazes-and-treasure-in-them. But i take your point.
Although I like the idea from a conceptual point of view, I find it lacking in practicality.
For example, if the maze´s walls were made out of stone brick, wouldn´t it be easier to simply mine the stone bricks out, instead of traversing the maze? Obsidian or bedrock would be required to dissuade the player from mining out the maze.
And, as some have already pointed out, it is basically a stronghold/temple...
Don´t get me wrong. As I said, I like the concept. I´m just not quite thrilled about the idea being actually implemented. Maybe in an adventure map

The same question could be raised for the piston puzzle in jungle temples.

Retired StaffRegardless, we already have biome specific abandoned structures for those areas. Perhaps something for plains and snowy plains?
