Okay, so me and my friends were talking today in school about how a kid got robbed, and the topic of lock came up. I then had an idea for a lock in Minecraft. This could be a replacement for many plugins adding commands such as /cprivate or /cpassword, as there would be an item to lock things. I've had a huge problem with griefing in my time playing Minecraft, so this would be really helpful.
Crafting
The crafting of a lock and key would be simple:
This would make a lock and key. The key would be the only key that could open that specific lock to prevent thievery, which is the main purpose of this idea. That's really all you could craft in this idea.
Lockable Items
There wouldn't be many lockable items, as there isn't much that you can actually enter in Minecraft, but the things that you could lock include wooden doors and chests. Instead of commands in servers where admins or moderaters could bypass that, there would only be one way to get into the locked item, and that would be the key it was crafted with.
Keychain
People use keychains in real life, right? Why couldn't they use it in Minecraft?
This is the recipe:
It would make a keychain, which when you right clicked with it in your hand, it would open an interface not unlike the chest, but with 20 slots, which I think is a reasonable amount of keys to have on a keychain. Besides, why would you need 20 keys? Another thing is, you could right click on a locked item with your keychain, and if the key was on the chain, it would unlock it. You don't have to take a key off a chain to use in real life, do you? Thought so.
That's really all I can think of at the moment, but I'm sure there's more to the idea that I can't remember from earlier. If there is, I'll post it as a comment. Thanks for any support. Check out my other posts, they're both suggestions, they both have to do with books though. Bye!
Personally, I've always wanted lock and keys. The main bonus to them, in my opinion, is that it would make adventure maps a lot more fun if you had to go and find keys. Maybe old doom style where you need the blue, red and yellow key for each door. That, or the Zelda option of small keys that open smaller, less important areas, but still main keys for specific doors. However, for the most part, it seems like clever lever placement and command blocks makes locks and keys less important--but i would still enjoy seeing them.

Thanks for the support, dude. Truthfully, all the ideas that I've posted so far are just those type of ideas that you think of on the couch and forget them an hour later, so thanks for all the support, everyone.
I was thinking the exact same thing! the only problem to that is the to get into someone elses "safe" all you would have to do is kill them and pick up the keys. You should also be able to make combo safes, so you just have to type four numbers or something. them you and your friends can use the same chest, but no one else can. Just an idea.
Kholdstare, like in plugins the locked door would be unbreakable, but like I said earlier, there is no one stopping someone from ‘making’ a new backdoor.

Don’t quote me. And Don’t quote me on not wanting to be quoted either.

Yes, but what if it is TRULY lockable, like bedrock around it. But it is a lot more useful for chests. You could also lock furnaces.

1. Locked items cannot be broken. Congrats, you just gave everyone access to adminium for the price of a few iron.
2. Locked items can be broken but drop nothing. So you don't care if you lose the items, as long as no one else gets them?
3. Locked items can be broken and drop items. Congratulations on your new pointless lock.
There's just no good way to introduce locks.
