I think that minecraft should add the pipes from buildcraft into the actual game, along with a few other cool things of buildcraft. But mostly the pipes, so like you could put something in a furnace and not have to transfer it into a chest and do it the lazier way (lol). Of course, you always could download the mod, but that take up more space, and a lot of people have trouble getting mods to work anyway, so this would be a major benefit in my opinion.
It may be worth considering, but if it was added it should be optional.
It's already optional if it is a mod.
As for the idea, I do not support. While Buildcraft does some neat stuff I personally would not want it in Vanilla. Also, it doesn't make sense when you say the mod takes up more space, adding Buildcraft to Minecraft literally means that you would just take the Buildcraft files and add them to the Minecraft Jar.
Finally, yes some people do have trouble installing mods, but when/if the mod API comes out that would be changed, as Buildcraft could be converted to a plugin and all people would have to do is download it and put it into a folder. Hell, odds are most mods would start coming with installers that put them in the folder for you. Maybe Curse would even release a tool that does it, similar to their Addon downloader for World of Warcraft.
I personally think this would be better kept as a mod. It is already optional for the people who want it and would completely change the feel of the game.

I posted something similar to this topic HERE. It was a simple idea of adding pipes, but it took a different approach than having it transport items and stuff. I do agree that minecraft could use more of an engineering aspect to it, like simple plumbing. However, making it more like buildcraft would unbalance certain aspects of the game, like traveling to undiscovered areas.
We don't need all of Buildcraft in Minecraft, just some simple automation like a "player block" that would use the item in its inventory like a player right-click (similar to the Deployer in RP2) and maybe limited pipes. You can't really fully automate tree & wheat farms, for instance, because of the lack of the aforementioned "player" block as well an auto-collecting chest, which if done properly, would much enhance the redstone aspect of the game.
Which currently is very lacking for most players if you don't want to build a redstone computer or maybe a crude automated farm.
Build craft is almost too electrical for vanilla minecraft.....but if you had the pipes with a redstone signal, and JUST the pipes, it would help with some farms/automation.
