Basiclly what I am proposing is that not only could you make armor the basic way, you could also make slightly better armor by crafting it differently. Perhaps to make a chestplate you would craft together two arms and a chest, for example. Maybe you could mix-and-match the sets, for example, maybe you want an iron chestplate but don't want to use that much iron. So, you would make a iron chest and leather arms then craft them together. That piece would have a little more durability and protection than the average of the two pieces. Also I think that all the alternate recipes for armor should include leather somewhere.
They have made dyable armor(SO MANY COMBINATIONS)so this is definitely possible.
But the dyeing of armor only works with leather and is nothing more than aesthetic changes. The OP's suggestion on the other hand, requires every possibility of armor mixing (and even more possibilities if you include all leather armor colors), mixed with the proper calculations of durability for every single possibility. It's doable, but it might be hell to implement.
