So I was replanting a forest earlier when I realized just how tedious it was, cutting trees, collecting saplings, and then having to replant them. Anyone else had that problem?
...no?
Huh. Anyway, I had a thought.... Instead of saplings despawning after 5 minutes as usual, what if, after 4 minutes, they automatically attempted to replant? Of course, if they landed in water or on rock, or maybe there already was some grass or a flower in the way... Well, then the sapling wouldn't replant, and would despawn after the usual 5 minutes. Also, they could be limited by a 'no self-planting in any saplings/trees in a 5-block radius' rule, to keep the forest from becoming an impassible wall of wood. Of course, you can still plant saplings wherever you want and they'll grow, this rule is only for self-planting. If you're clear-cutting a forest for space, just make sure you collect the saplings as they drop, or punch them up after they've seeded but before they grow. No more forest. Or, if you want a never-ending forest for wood, cut the tree down and move on to the next. The saplings that drop will reseed, and grow on their own, so you don't end up with massive plains and no trees for miles around your home.
Just an idea I had, thanks for taking the time to read it. Do you not like my idea? Tell me why. Help me to see the errors of my logic. Do you like my idea? Hell, tell me why. My ego could always be bigger. XD
::EDIT:: Looks like it's not entirely my idea anymore! Should have looked harder, I guess!
I thought this too and suggested it a few months ago. Self planting/placing blocks would be great.
For saplings especially, as it would allow a forest to possibly recover after burning down. I personally would rule the self placing to not be 50%, but rather 'self plant when there is not another sapling or log block within 3 blocks'. Which would keep the forests from becoming too dense.
Unoriginality aside, this is being met with overall positive feedback. Huzzah, I had a good idea! Put this down in the history books!
::EDIT:: Updated the reseeding limits... Only self-plants if no trees are within a 5 block radius. Also, spellchecked. Man, why did nobody point out my terrible spelling? XD
Thanks everyone for the positive feedback! Tell your friends, let's see just how popular this idea can become! We're on a roll here!
I'll replant your trees if you cut down my jungle. I like the idea of them replanting themselves. You know those snow biome pine trees(i think they're pine trees)? They should only replant themselves if they get burned down. That's what usually happens in real life.
The error here is that a ton of saplings spawn, so the forest that regrew would be incredibly, incredibly dense.
Like a real forest? Yes, they would be incredibly dense if it were not for competition for sunlight. Not all the sapplings will grow into trees at the same time. During this time, a tree may shadow another tree, causing it not to grow, and even pop out the ground as an item again. This is the case even with manually replanted forests. I support this idea.
Saplings should plant into the ground as a block instead of disappearing from the world. This should only happen if the light level allows it, as well as if the requirements for a sapling to grow into a tree are also present. Likewise, it should only work on dirt/grass blocks. That is, if a sapling falls in the sand, it stays an item until picked up, or removed from the world.
The error here is that a ton of saplings spawn, so the forest that regrew would be incredibly, incredibly dense.
Yeah, that could be an issue. Maybe each sapling could have a 50% chance of self-planting? I wouldn't want to make it too rare, otherwise you'll end up being better off replanting manually, which is what I'm trying to avoid.
I'm not sure what you're getting at... Saplings won't just be randomly spawning, they'll only plant (maybe) if they've been dropped as an item first. If a biome has no trees by nature, they won't just pop up everywhere. Even if there are a few trees in the plains biome, if you want them gone just be sure to pick up the saplings before you move on. Is that what your concern was?
::EDIT::
Ok, thought about it, and I think I have a solution: Trees only replant in Forest/Tiaga/Jungle biomes. So if you have a tree farm in a plains biome, it'll be maintenence-free. Adding this to OP.

Well, it does have to meet all the conditions, and the probabilities of that aren't too high.

A few other things I think should self place instead of despawning (provided they are not in water/lava): Mushrooms (on 'natural blocks' (stone, dirt, mycelium, etc) of light level 12 or less) Flowers (grass or dirt block of light level 8) Netherwart (on soul sand) Sugar Cane (on water adjacent dirt, grass, or sand) Dragon Egg (anywhere. Don't want to lose this.) Seeds (on tilled soil) Cactus (on sand not adjacent to another cactus.) Written Books (become a small book object which can be broken and picked up. Chooses a random orientation like the monster head items. Adventure map makers would love this. ) Maps (become a small paper object which can be broken and picked up. Chooses a random orientation like the monster head items. Adventure map makers would love this.)

I looked for similar ideas, but I didn't find anything... Sorry for kinda stealing your idea. I'mma quote you into my OP, since this idea is no longer origional. I like the idea of mushrooms replanting onto mycelium, but other than that, I've never really had issues with anything else not replanting. Books and maps becoming dropped items would be pretty epic for adventure maps, though.
Also, I love your signature and desperately want to see this for myself now. XD

The suggestion was in the former Small Suggestions thread, which disappeared over the last week. Lost a good hundred ideas I posted in it.
The mushroom replanting, how I see it could work on natural blocks is this. Imagine a bunch of mushrooms get washed down in a cave. If they are lucky enough to end up on the of the stream of water, they would form a collection of mushrooms around a very wet place.
In regards to my sig, it is about time I go on Voxel Modpack and create it. I'll make a sig image of it.

I support this. I'm fed up of cutting down a forest then having to replant ALL those saplings again!!!
That is what got me inspired to make this thread. I've got a small outpost about half a MC day's walk from my main base specifically for woodcutting, but only half of my day is cutting trees, the other half is replanting them! What a waste of time!

I think this would be a really great addition to the game, and it would give a more 'natural' feel to the environment.
More support! XD You can ask my wife, I never have ideas this popular...
I like the idea of saplings replanting themselves, but not so much the idea of this only happening in certain biomes. You wouldn't see a biome over run by trees if this were to be implemented because it only happens if you've cut a tree down and then just left the saplings. Each tree only seems to be very likely to have one or two saplings successfully grow, and of course this can only happen in an area where you've already got trees, so I didn't see any need to worry about trees spreading out of control by this method. If we are bringing biomes into it though, then I think I'd prefer a slight variant of it. If a certain size area in a jungle, forest, etc biome is bare then a (planted) sapling has a possibility of spawning in it, which may then grow as normal.
But as I said, I'd prefer your initial idea but without the biome restriction. 'Tree farms' (whether they're inside, outside on a biome that wouldn't necessarily have a large amount of trees on, or so on) are fairly common and I think they'd benefit hugely from it. As someone who needs a tree farm since my current home on SMP is on a mushroom biome in the middle of a colossal ocean, I know what a pain it is to not only cut down and plant trees but to have to gather up the saplings by either waiting for leaves to break or breaking them by hand.
All in all, I like the idea and it has my support.
Honestly, I'm thinking what would be the best would be no biome restrictions, but in Forest, Jungle and Tiaga biomes, give the seeds a better chance to replant or something... Or maybe they would grow into full trees faster or something. Some sort of bonus for being in a tree-friendly zone.
Where's the signature!!!??? I NEED a signature to represent this thread!!!
Such zeal! Anyone here any good at making signature banners? I'll go ahead and try to cobble one together, but I'm sure a leftover slice of pizza could probably do better. Keep your eyes out for it, it should be up and running in 1-2 hours, max.

OP amended. As I'm a bit busy, anyone care to help me with my failed attempt at a siggy banner? XD
I find this entertaining. I have seen this idea pop up numerous times, and each time it does it either gets an astounding amount of posts. Usually the posts are either all for it or all against. Last time it was all against and this time people are for it again.
I can't find the threads that have suggested this before though, so I'll add my support to this.

I was really expecting to get like, 3 posts TOPS all saying it's a stupid idea. I never thought this many people would agree with me! Thanks for the support!
If I could make one change though, I would make it only a 25% chance of planting itself after five minutes. It would cut down on how dense everything is.
