I think that the "Wither Effect" should be a rare enchantment that can only be placed on Stone Swords.
This enchantment only works in the Nether, but if you craft the sword together with a Nether Star it will work in the overworld as well.
The main reason I thought this would be a better alternative is because
A: It uses resources already in the game (besides the enchantment)
B: It's much simpler and
C: It gives a reason to go back to a weaker tier of sword.
Not that bad of an idea, although I'd still rather the Wither Sword just be a rare drop on those skeletons. Seems like that would be the simplest and most balanced way to do it imo.

Good to see that you're still active.
Also, I wouldn't consider this to be "breaking the rules" as it is not a copy,
but a refining of someone else's post.
Not to mention, I also give that person credit for their original idea.
Would you still consider this to be breaking the rules if you were not
retired?
No this should be perfectly fine, as you are building off a different idea in a way that is different enough to warrant it's own thread. This side conversation about the "legality" of said thread though may be another matter so we should stay on topic.
I guess I wouldn't mind this idea either, as you are forced to use a weak sword to get it. Plus you said it was rare and I assume it would only be found around levels 15-30.

I still think it should be designed the way I described originally on GreenJaySorm's topic:
Blaze Rod, Obsidian, Blaze Rod
Blaze Rod, Wither Skull, Blaze Rod
Nothing, Nether Star, Nothing
It would glow orange with a light level of 7 when in hand, the source of the light would originate from the player. It'd give mobs a Wither I effect 1/4 the time, Flame I/4 the time, and no special effect 1/2 the time. It is costly to create, but the recipe makes sense. It gives a GOOD alternative way of using Nether Stars. Not to mention that similar to how Spiders and Endermen glow white when a bit far away at Night time, the sword would glow orange, giving people in SMP a heads-up that an OP player is near.

Thoughts?
That would be cool but i don't know if GearTooth would be up for it. Plus my schedule is sort of wierd at the moment cuz of school so :/
I can collaborate, it actually sounds really fun.
I have school as well, buts it's a special program so I only have it on certain week days.
The old fashioned way, messaging.
