Besides using it to obtain wheat seeds or tilling land the hoe is essentially useless. Same damage as our fists, usually a wood or stone one is all you'll need. If you're doing big farms an iron one. Very rarely will someone find themselves needing a diamond hoe unless you're some kind of hardcore farmer.
I propose a type of "buff" to the hoe. As it is the main gardening/farming tool why not let it act as though it has a Fortune 1 effect on it whenever you go to harvest. Allow the use of the hoe to bring in just slightly more harvest. And unlikely but a hoe with enchantment? Would solve the need for gigantic farms that take up space (Specially in multiplayer) This "buff" could simply be just that, an upgrade, or possibly even result in a nerf to harvesting any other way.
As it is I feel the hoe is rather...useless. An item used rarely then thrown away never to be seen again. Give us a reason to use them!

Gold
Besides crafting a clock or powered rails, there's not much point in using gold for tools or armor. Save for the small chance that people feel they want a high level enchantment but don't have much XP to spare. Even then though your item is hardly going to last.
That being said my proposition for gold is that perhaps --and this would only apply to gold items. That they have an additional enchantment level added on. Sword normally can only get sharpness V? With gold you'd be able to get Sharpness VI. Also the "Unbreaking" enchantment be a possible enchant for any and all gold items. This would put them closer to iron equipment. And as gold IS more common than diamonds but less so than iron it would be more of an upgrade between the two granted you're into enchanting stuff.

Bow & Arrows
Regarding the bows? Just a fix for the enchantments on them...numerous times I've seen people go to enchant them with 30 levels of experience only to get "Punch 1". Rather silly if you ask me
Arrows on the other hand I have a more practical idea for. Now many of us have all seen the "elemental arrows" and such and unless Mojang decides to go that route and implement those themselves I myself find them to be rather...out of place. Unsure why to be honest.
But an alternative to them. Readying a bow with an arrow pulled back then moving in front of fire. Should this not simply light your wooden arrow on aflame? Perhaps give players a 5-8 second time limit to shoot the arrow when lit before the arrow burns up and you lose it. It'd be a cheap alternative to the "Flame" enchantment but the problem with it being you need both netherrack and flint and steel to create a fire to light your arrows. Meaning your source of fire is stuck in place.
I had a similar idea with adding gunpowder or a fire charge to an arrow to make quite literally an arrow with a pouch at the end for explosive arrows but that seemed a little far fetched. The effect of these would of course help but if not fired in time would no doubt blow up in your face.
(These explosive arrows could also implement the quiver possibly as a way to hold your "alternative" arrows as we would need a way to switch between the two)

Maps and item frames
To cover these two in case you have not read up on upcoming planned features...
Maps are being upgraded and will offer a zoom feature as well as when crafted be completely empty, only drawing the location and starting the map when right clicked instead of be centered where it was crafted. The item frames do just as their name implies. Frames an item on the wall.
Now that that's covered a preview of a map in combination with an item frame can be seen here.
My proposed idea for these is when placing multiples maps of the same zoom level next to each other in item frames, that they expand and merge. Below is quicks sloppy demonstration of what I'm talking about.
Doing this would essentially allow you to fill an entire wall with maps showing your world off. Of course being as how in multiplayer there could possibly be tons of maps I don't believe they should show players current locations. Rather we use the dyes to mark maps of important locations. In my opinion this would REALLY open up the game to explorers and those who like to adventure. Servers would have starting rooms with maps and general directions on where specific locations are.

Glowstone
As we all know glowstone simply does not grow back. Meaning there's a limited supply unless you're willing to venture off into the nether which sometimes can be dangerous. As many have proposed a way to grow glowstone would be VERY beneficial. But being as how already difficult it is to get them, I feel simply having an ingredient to grow them in a typical farm is too easy. Now I've seen some methods people have provided and quite a few of them were rather....overkill, making it near pointless to do all the steps required when venturing out to find more would simply be easier.
This idea even I'm unsure about, as such I have two ideas to propose.
The first being simply using glowstone dust like redstone almost. Sprinkling it down and letting it grow over time for however long it'd take. Similar to cocoa beans they'd start small and grow larger till they're a full size block. But this block would be organic. Requiring the use of possibly flint and steel to "bake" them solid or simply using blaze powder like bonemeal. This would give the idea that glowstone grows like a plant almost but the intense heat of the nether has baked them solid over time
My second idea is ghast tears. As some may have seen in demonic movies that liquid will pour up and drip towards the cieling. As some people see the nether as sort of a "Hell" or "Demon Realm" of some sort, a player would look up, right click with the ghast tear and it'd float upwards till it hit the cieling planting what would grow into a cluster of glowstone.

Cauldrons
As a water source for potions? They kinda suck...their best purpose so far is to be a make-shift sink inside players homes. So my idea for them is mass potion producing. Perhaps require blaze powder or coal of other types of fuel to be inserted but the ingredients would simply be tossed inside the cauldron. As more ingredients are added the cauldron fills up, instead of waiting for it to brew as in the brewing stand's system, a light smoke similar to fire but not as thick and possibly lighter would emit until it's done. Once you have your potion fully brewed it'd supply more than the brewing stands usual, 3 potions. This again would increase player interaction and as well as give people in the community to be the role of potion brewer that supplies other players. Of course the number of potions given would have to be discussed and weighed so as not to render brewing stands obsolete. Perhaps make the potions from cauldrons last not as long to counter-act the fact that it'd make much much more in quantity.

Increasing villager relations
Bringing water to fill desert village wells, building walls around them, supplying them with crops or building a wall to protect them would yield better trades with the villagers. As it is I find most trades to be rather unfair.
- - -
Swimming enchantment
Simply an enchantment to go on either the torso or more likely, the boots. Plain and simple it'd allow you to move through out water freely. Going through currents would render you to the current normal swimming speed and swimming up water drops (Water scaffolding) would be easier

Eyes of Ender
Not to be taken exactly seriously but a funny idea I had being that in some way you build a small tower and atop it have a way to place the Eye of Ender inside a pumpkin or something. Similar to the "Eye of Sauron" it'd sit higher than most looking around for mobs. Any snow/iron golems would then have an increased mob detection area. Would be useful for larger villages or when players expand on current ones. Mobs may attack one side while the golems are opposite and therefore render the villagers as though fish in a barrel.

Cakes
As seen in the "planned section" of the wiki there's Pumpkin pie. Again sort of a joke idea but hey, might as well mention it none the less.
Cocoa beans to make chocolate cake, carrots to make Carrot Cake
Well that's all the ideas I have for now. Most if not all have probably been mentioned before so I apologize if so. Regardless, thoughts? Opinions? Love 'em? Hate them? Share your thoughts!
Dinnerbone mentioned adding enchantments to other items is a possibility in the future. The beloved hoe might make that list.

Gold
Agreed. Gold is currently useless except for utility purposes. I would support any method of making gold more useful, seeing as it is rare, but has little practical use aside from rails.

Bow & Arrows
Imho, bows are fine as is. Enchantments need a bit of fixing, but otherwise they're quite powerful and need little to aid them. As for flaming arrows, wood isn't quite that flammable. Try tossing a thin stick through a camp-fire, and see if it ignites your friend who's sitting on the other side. Flame arrows should be saved for enchanting and...lava.

Maps and item frames I fully support this. Very nice idea.

Glowstone
Introducing the amazing! The renewable! The light source that does everything glowstone does! The Jack-O-Lantern!
Wait, no one wants to use it because they think it looks ugly. *Comforts the Jack-O-Lantern* Seriously though, because glowstone is such an important ingredient in potions, and because it looks so beautiful, it should remain a non-renewable resource. Think of it as being similar to diamonds. There's no reason why diamonds shouldn't be renewable by the same logic as you and others have used on glowstone.

Cauldrons
Cauldrons were added as a means of potion-making, but were too complex. They have little use besides being a decorative block, but I think they should stay that way. Brewing stands are just fine.

Increasing villager relations
How would you code you affecting the environment into an entity improving trade? It's a good idea, but has been reiterated many, many times. By the same logic, a villager should "sell out" on supplies after 2-3 trades, and yet they can maintain a trade forever as long as you don't close the trade window. Villager trading is realistic enough currently without going overboard.

Me Gusta.

Eyes of Ender
Good idea. I like the "watchtower" affect.

The Cake is a lie. Don't let it fool you.
Well that's all the opinions I have for now. Most if not all have probably been critiqued before so I apolgize if so. Regardless, thoughts? Opinions? Love 'em? Hate them? Share your thoughts!

I've always felt a natural buff should've been implemented.
