I think the Nether should have a fully functional range of resources that mirror the Overworld...
It should have a Nether specific ore at least one preferably multiple tiers
Like Nether Steel and Nether Gems
It should have farm-able plants and animals that are exclusive to the Nether! Beyond nether wart...
Like Nether Corn and Nether Cabbage
Nether Lizards that produce farm-able Nether Eggs
Also tools and armor should be craft-able from the materials in the Nether!
I feel the Nether is an under utilized place and it shouldn't be! Anyone else have any ideas to make the Nether more of a home and less of a hassle?
I don't mean an exact mirror of the Overworld's resources necessarily. The Nether is a step up in difficulty to gain access to and survive there. The resources obtained in the Nether should be a slight bit better than the Overworld... I always felt the Nether was the next tier in exploration and advancement but it never was made to be a fully functional ecosystem!
The Nether has a limited amount of uses that I find disappointing beyond the alchemy, fireplace decoration, and portal application! Also the fast travel which thanks for mentioning had slipped my mind!
The nether with added livestock and crops could be a place more people would be willing to consider a main base of operations not just a partial farming location... And ultimately should prepare you for future planar challenges! Also the Wither is a step in the right direction ^.^
Heh yeah laziness on my part to make the general point! I wouldn't want everything to be called Nether X... X.x How very boring! Ignoring Netherwart, Netherrack, and Netherbrick The resources would have unique names!
The real draw being improved progression and also much added decorative possibles! With Nether flowers and interesting Nether pets! Oh and I'm sure Nether lizards would make very good Nether scale armor ;P

Uhhh, I think the concept of livestock and crops should forever remain untouched by the Nether. I'm not trying to be mean nor am I bashing your idea, but these are things best left to the earthly Overworld. The hellish red lava-filled dimension we know as the Nether isn't really meant for that kind of agriculture (unless you count Nether Warts...) - otherwise Notch or Jeb would've given us this stuff long ago.
I'm always open to a new Nether resource as long as it's original and isn't added just for the sake of being there.

Hey, you there. Yes, you! Are you thinking about posting a suggestion on the forums anytime soon? If so, please read this before doing so.
If crops where never intended to be in the nether then Netherwart would have never been added that much is true! I would argue that leaving the Nether a boring hellscape is not making it a better hellscape!
In fact you wouldn't need to make breeding a part of the Nether either! That is if the hearts so offended your hellish realm! Nether Lizards would likely reproduce with eggs!
The devilishly delightful creatures are aggressive in the wild! However if you steal some molten eggs and hatch them yourself! They become trusted companions!
Having an ecosystem does not mean its an idyllic serene farm... The Nether can maintain its essence and still be a much more useful place!
First... I like the idea... BUT I don't think it's right for the "flavor" of the nether. The nether is supposed to be a "hell" dimension. There -may- even be an in-joke in the fact that mushrooms grow there. Clearly I'm not on the dev team but the second I saw mushrooms in the nether Guybrush Threepwood chimed in in my brain "I knew there would be mushrooms in hell!"
That all suggest to me that while -super cool- I don't think this will get their attention. I would -love- for there to be at least one one ore from the nether, Three ores would be super cool... Or perhaps pummace stone you could make a boat from and sail the lava oceans... or make heat resistant armor from... But I don't think there will be much more in the way of nether crops, or any passive mobs. If there were infact an animal mob, I'd expect it to be hostile, Say it was a lizard of some kind... But I think you would have to try and find a way to tame it without it being passive... the nether -is- a hell dimension... I think the idea is it's supposed to be unlivable... cus you're only supposed to be there if you're dead...
But yea, if they DID decide to go with only one part of your idea, I'd want it to be the ore. I think it's the best individual part of your idea, and the least likely to, if you will, Change the feel of the nether.
I like your idea about being able to make a boat that can sail lava made with a nether resource and also heat resistance armor! I would like to add that plants or meat gathered from the nether and made into food could also produce heat resistant buffs!
You see adding additional resources to the Nether would vastly improve it! If only to help your survival in the Nether
I don't believe you have to vastly alter the motif of the Nether to improve its function... Continuing with the Nether Lizards they would be a hostile mob that you tame by acquiring eggs from their nest and hatching them as your own! You'd likely never be able to tame an adult Nether Lizard!
However the notion that everything in the Nether should be hostile or aggressive is disputed by the existence and behavior of zombie pigmen who are neutral until provoked...
True that, And I some how missed your whole "egg stealing" bit earlier. I'm certainly not saying it's a bad Idea, Hell I love it. I just think this is unlikely to happen. My painfully realistic side showing I fear.
I guess my continuing issue is there's more questions than answers. As is now the lizard you're talking about is just a lizard shaped wolf thats harder to get as a pet. It, at it's core for now, just sounds like a wolf, that would clearly have to be fire proof. Making wolves less useful and your lizard a little over powered. Perhaps you could develop the idea a little more? how big would they be? maybe they'd be less aggressive towards other nether mobs but it was big so you could ride it... or maybe it's small and it flies, doing ranged attacks at your ranged enemies... Or maybe it reflects ranged attacks making it wonderful for fighting ghasts/protecting any nether buildings you have...
But yea. I think the crops Idea would have to wait for them to decide that the pigmen are actually a society as opposed to a relatively mindless zombie mob. Or for a new mob that would actually try to make societies...
The very nature of the nether is a stepping stone in progression to finish the ender portal. As the Nether is a more difficult place than the Overworld it would be reasonable to expect that anything tamable in the Nether would be better than something of equal rarity in the Overworld! Certainly fire and lava immunity would be an excellent trait of creatures in the Nether!
The premise that something from the Nether shouldn't be overpowering something from the Overworld is a bit puzzling to me... If a Nether Lizard even if it wasn't rarer than a wolf requiring access and exploration in the nether to obtain it would make it much harder to acquire. Wouldn't you expect it to have traits that are an improvement?
Even if it had no traits and was just a wolf with a lizard body would it not have vanity value?
If it was a rare spawn in the Nether would it not be a rewarding experience to hunt?
I believe it would! If the bar of acceptable additions to Minecraft is indeed uniqueness a ranged fire attack and immunity to fire would indeed separate it from the wolf.
I would also argue with your point that zombie pigmen are mindless! They attack only when provoked and they defend not only themselves but all nearby pigmen in the area of a crime! They already exhibit tribalism and show greater cooperation than villagers! ;P
