So, I was thinking today about how I could expand my food supply in multiplayer, and the inevitable answer was fish.
However, its a pain staking process to get enough fish to have a good supply, when in reality, its not that hard of a task.
I purpose Trot lines be added, due to standard fishing not rendering enough food for a viable supply.
First off, two new items would be needed- Hooks and Trot Lines.
Hooks would be crafted in a 3x3 setting, using iron ingots, in the shape of a hook. It would be able to give 12 per recipe.
Now, once hooks are attained, you would have to craft a trot line. I think the best way to do this would be to have a line of string in the middle of a 3x3, outlined by 6 hooks.
It would be placed on the side of a block, on top of water, just like a real line.
Now, for the mechanics of such a system would be simple.
Now, for real trot lines, you leave them out over night in the course of a day to get full. This would easily work in Minecraft being the days go faster. every time a fish gets on it, a good way of showing it would be to add the item texture under the hook, to appear it is on it.
I think standard fishing is pretty well-balanced right now. The thing that's great about fishing is it's the most portable food source in the game. You don't have to build up a supply of fish, because your fishing rod is your supply. If you're in the habit of carrying a fishing rod, anytime you get hungry, you can immediately get a fish.

At least with other farmable food sources you need to plow land, set up water, or slaughter the animals.

...er, after plowing land for crops, you just click on the tile from time to time to acquire food.
Still takes more time to set up than crafting and placing one of these things.
