Why, hello! Alright, so for you pre1.8 guys, don't you miss the auto-bow, at least a little?
Well, via the power of Redstone engineering, one could craft a replacement!
We're going to need a dispenser (obviously), a little redstone, a lever, a stick, and cobblestone.
First off, to allow emulation of automatic firing, we need to build a Redstone clock unit - just a little
intergrated 5-clock.
N N N
T S D
D R D
N = none, T = RS torch, S = smoothstone, R = RS repeater, D = RS dust
Awesome! When we turn the lever on for a second (click and release), it'll fire like normal and can
go as fast as you can rapid-click. When we turn the lever on and leave it (click and hold), the clock
is activated, and it fires at a constant speed similar to the old bow.
Now we simply need to attach the clock to the dispenser, the lever to the clock, and the entire firing
unit to our cobblestone stock and wood handle.
N N N
S C D L N
N = none, S = cobblestone, C = redstone clock, D = dispenser, stick, and L = lever
Viola! With the power of Redstone, we've replicated a very versatile and beloved weapon.

How so? I'd be more that happy to figure out a medium if you would explain a little bit more.
I was trying to get a sense of balance in my crafting logic, (Seeing as one building this weapon
in block form would need to do) and not add random diamonds everywhere. If you would elaborate,
I could fix the problem.
I wasn't aware that the old bow was OP in PvP... The crafting recipe may not be the easiest to remember, I grant you that, as it requires a very small amount of Redstone knowledge to really remember it well. Any fixes?
I'm all for improving the idea, and certainly sharing what is wrong is part of it, but only having what is wrong
and not how to improve doesn't make the suggestion any better.
The whole factor that balances the dispenser was the fact you couldn't readily aim it or home in on targets. Your slashing that by adding a hand cannon version without any further balancing features. Even if you did add in proper balances like durability, range, or what not, I'm still against it because your basically making a portable universal launcher, something that was never really intended and doesn't have the same solid applications as a static dispenser. It can only really can be used to shoot arrows rapidly or launch fire charges, both of which are overpowered. Placing buckets of fluids, mine carts, boats, throwing splash potions, shooting eggs, snowballs, or even dropping items, are all things you can achieve with your hands. So in the end, your really using a convoluted mechanism to bring back the old bow or create an overpowered fire charge launcher that never breaks, doesn't cost too much more to make than conventional weapons, can't be enchanted, and doesn't fit the feel of the game.
You can spend energy trying to improve this suggestion, but the most expedient course is to scrap it and start fresh. This wasn't a successful attempt.
Uh, this is a cool idea, but I do agree it's sort of overpowered.....if there was a way to limit it..but thats called a bow. What about an enchantment for a bow that could make it fire rapidly in short bursts?
Wow, those are very good points. I wasn't thinking about fire charges at all.
There are basically two ranged weapons I want in Minecraft along with our current bow -
1. The good ol' auto-bow
2. An arch-less crossbow thing with moderate damage and refire speed.
Maybe I should just suggest these aspects as enchantments instead, as they,
like you've said, failed miserably.

I'd like them as seperate things rather than enchants. Maybe limit the range of the dispensor gun and limit it to arrows?
And have an arc on the crossbow, just less of one.
