Note: This is not a thread asking for 1.7 generation back, or for complaining about 1.8.1. When commenting, restrict your criticisms(Which I welcome, if thought out and reasonable), to criticisms of the topic itself.
I had some ideas about ways to improve the terrain generation, which I thought would be worth sharing. These ideas take three major factors into account. One: Impressiveness. This is a measure of how interesting the terrain is to look at. Mountains/ Extreme hills do well in this category. Two: Realism. This is how realistic the terrain is. Realism should take a back seat to how fun the game is to play. Three: Practicality. How useful the Terrain is, how easy it is to build on. I intend to use aspects of 1.7 generation that were are good features, added to the 1.8 terrain.
Larger beaches. This has been brought up before in topics specifically related to 1.7 generation, and in this case, I find they were a good feature, and looked good.
More realistic biome placement. It's always a little disconcerting when you're walking through a desert, and suddenly it changes to a tundra. Deserts should border plains, maybe jungles, or mountains, mostly. (Extreme hills would be unaffected by these changes, as mountains are frequently the cause of deserts, jungles and swamps existing where they do.)
Flowing rivers. This isn't strictly generation, but it is related. Rivers flow, rather than be stagnant. This could be accomplished by having rivers be filled with a different type of water, rather than source blocks. These would flow, even if the terrain is not sloped downwards. Trying to pick it up with a bucket would just give you source blocks of water, rather than flowing water. I don't think there's anything in the code that would prevent that, and it would add more realism, and make the game more interesting.
Underground rivers. Essentially, rivers that flow into their own type of cave, a river cave. (Intended to look like it was carved by the river.) It would be fun to just follow the river and see where you end up.
Underwater caves and ravines. Simple idea, caves that spawn below ocean biomes (with an exposed top) are, rather than simply having water flow into them, are filled with water source blocks.
Lakes. I don't mean like the puny little 5x5m ponds you find on plains, but actual lakes. Large, and fairly deep(but more shallow than oceans) with rivers flowing into them. These would be fairly uncommon, but large enough to build a village or small town in. If different varieties of fish are ever added, these could yield different kinds than oceans, like fresh water fish.
Harbors. One major difference between 1.7 and 1.8 is how oceans changed from being part of the generation code to their own biome, which in many cases moved continents further apart. This is not a bad thing per se, but the smaller bodies of water could be interesting, and more realistic, if its not everywhere. Sometimes, large areas of land bordering ocean biomes would have large islands closer together near the mainland, somewhat similarly to the way it was in 1.7. This could be useful in building interesting cities near water.
Those are my ideas. If you like them, great. If you don't, I must ask you to not just say, "These are bad ideas.", without explaining why, and/or offering ways to improve it. Feel free to add your own ideas, as long as they are reasonable and on topic. If someone posts criticism without reading the post, is uncivil or does not obey my requests on how to comment and criticize, I encourage those who did read my requests to yell at that person.

And for two and a half thousand years, the ring passed out of all knowledge... Rumor turned into myth... myth turned into legend, and legend gave rumor and myth amiss, and went straight into autumn. ...Wait, what?
Flowing rivers, no. That's why we have boats. And you are wanting to make it realistic. Realistic doesn't always = better. Harbors, major NO. There you might be missing the point of "Sandbox." We have to build it, not have it built for us.

Clearly you either didn't read the whole thing, or didn't understand it. I said: "Realism should take a back seat to how fun the game is to play." It's there. You were clearly not paying attention. Two, You misunderstand again. I don't mean existing structures, I mean harbors/bays as a natural formation, like the Hudson Bay, The Bay of Bengal. The term refers to the body of water itself, NOT structures built around it. Also, boats would still be useful on oceans (Their primary purpose.) or on the aforementioned lakes.Hope that clarifies.

The thing with rivers is that if you've ever actually been to a river, you find the ones in Minecraft are almost unrecognizable. They look more like thin inlets than actual rivers, as rivers tend to have a current. Note: While realistic does not equal good, it does not equal bad either. If rivers had current, they would be far more interesting.

I can the rivers as a problem, after reading the second post (I was "oh, duh"), and the flowing concept hasn't been perfected yet, so the jagged edges might make the rivers feel... messed up. Now harbors... I can see miniature harbors next to villages, but then the villagers should be able to use boats. Underwater caves, we would need special diver suits, obviously, and along with special lights that work underwater.
The rest of your ideas are good.
I don't suffer from insanity. I enjoy every minute of it!

What about rivers connecting into oceans/lakes, with a delta, and having the current decided from that? Also, maybe rivers start from certain things like mountains where water is taken today?

I have discovered a truly remarkable proof of this, which this margin is too small to contain.
