* Before posting this I actually did a search for "Minecraft Moon" on Google and apparently there is a mod for this already called MoonCraft. I have no idea if this still works but, wow, I feel dumb. Whatever I will post this anyway since I thought it was original; I guess not.
Okay people, so I had this crazy idea while I was playing Minecraft today. I am trying to avoid a long drawn out explanation on how this idea formed in my head. I will say this though, basically I was looking up in the night sky and saw the moon and immediately wanted to build a spaceship to get there.
I thought it would be cool to have a recipe to build a spaceship almost like building a Nether portal. For example, you need to configure the blocks in such a way it forms a spaceship, Maybe in-game blueprints you can find would be pretty cool (ex, 20 iron, 1 gold, 25 cobbles, 5 glass ect.). Once materials are required and you build the spaceship accordingly it is ready to launch.
Another point to add is maybe allow up to one storage chest on board. This would make bringing and retrieving supplies easy. Also a good note to add, the spaceship is only launchable during the night.
Once successfully teleporting to the moon you are able to explore and gather useful materials. These new materials can open up a lot more creative avenues. Not only will you be able to find new materials but more Mobs and such.
One material I can immediately think of is moon-rock, which decreases gravity when moving across this block. I would play on this stuff all day and watch creepers fly of course!
I have tons of ideas but I will see what people think so far. If anyone has anything else to add feel free to share.

What the heck does "It doesn't fit in vanilla" mean?
Minecraft is this!
This isn't an issue in it's own right. Many issues arise from what I like to call "hasty denial".
Concepts such as "too futuristic", "overpowered", "not thematic" are not intrinsically bad reasons for denying a reason. However, if they are provided without supporting details, they become SPAM.
As a critic, it is your job to detail WHY you decline the suggestion. "not thematic" is not detailing, it's giving a reason. However, unless you support your reason; it is highly circumstantial and can be argued. You're there to post a reasonable discussion as to WHY you feel it's not thematic, not lead the OP into a meaningless debate.
It's a point of order, if your criticism is one or fewer sentences, save yourself the energy and don't post. "This is too futuristic" can be argued for ANY concept from wolves to pistons to laser rifles.
I support the idea presented in the OP. Since that is how he wants to play his open world game. I mean, if they added the moon. And you didn't like it you could choose to never go there. The OPer, on the other hand, can never do what they want...in an open world environment that is blasphemy!
Doesn't fit in vanilla?? Well then, ANYONE can say ANYTHING doesnt fit in vanilla, and it'll automatically be denied? "waste to add another one" Well then, there is only one time that you could do something in the End, so would'nt that be a waste? And yet it was added.
perhaps instead of a spaceship, it would be an easter egg when you reach the sky limit?
I dont why people dont know this, but Minecraft is a fantasy medieval game. Because Notch and Jeb havent added anything futuristic yet, then they will never. No, redstone isnt fururistic, its a fantasy aspect.
So no support, it doesnt belong in an unmodded Minecraft. There is a big difference between mods and vanilla. So if you see a mod for something, it genrally doesnt belong in vanilla Minecraft.

No
Minecraft is a sandbox game. Or "Open World"
An open world is a type of video gamelevel design where a player can roam freely through a virtual world and is given considerable freedom in choosing how or when to approach objectives.
So no support, it doesnt belong in an unmodded Minecraft. There is a big difference between mods and vanilla. So if you see a mod for something, it genrally doesnt belong in vanilla Minecraft.
Seriously? How many mods have been added to "vanilla" since 1.2.5 alone?

Seriouusly, this idea is outlandish! We've already got three dimenshions, it would be a waste to add another.

Also, I don't know what medieval times you're thinking about. But they didn't have electricity, otherwise it would have been called the light ages.

Retired StaffThere! A well thought out reason why this won't work in game.
Although I point out that Advanced Dungeons and Dragons scaled spaceflight...in a medieval magical way no less!
Also, why is it called redstone wiring? And pistons are far more advanced than a pick axe...
We are safe from those comparisons though, aren't we...
