The recent addition of editable books in Minecraft 1.3.1 is the long awaited implementation of a great idea, and in my opinion a huge success. However, to the disappointment of many players, including myself, there is no way to store these books other than in chests (which, lets face it, is somewhat lame). The obvious solution? Functional bookshelves!
As I see it, only a few things would need to change in order to implement this idea, but the possibilities it would create would be endless.
1. A new item, the 'Storage Bookshelf' would be added to the game. This would be crafted by placing a bookshelf and a chest together in a crafting grid.
2. Storage Bookshelves would have inventories, much like that of a chest (but only 3x3, like the crafting grid).
3. Regular bookshelves would retain their normal functions (enchantment level boost, decoration, and movability by pistons).
Thanks for reading. Any feedback is greatly appreciated. I know this idea is not original, but in my opinion, it needs to be done.
Bookshelves do have a use aside from decorative. That being to empower enchanting tables and enchant at higher levels. Nevertheless, I like the idea of using them as a container for books. However, I would consider if being able to put other items into bookshelves is something you would want as well.
Also, some people would like to be able to move bookshelves with pistons to create secret passage ways, so adding a storage function to them would make this impossible. How would you address this?

Thanks for the feedback. The main post has been edited to address each of the issues that you have presented.
