Hello, most of you are probably used to the idea of enchanting your weapons and armor. But some of you might hate it. For you, I have a proposition: The Upgrade bench!
The Recipe will be:
So, by now you are wondering "What is the Upgrade table?". The Upgrade table is a counter for the enchantment table for those who dont like the idea of killing monsters for EXP then spending it on upgrades that make your armor and swords gleamish.
The Upgrade table is close to a enchantment table in a way, but different. I have multiple ways how the Upgrade Bench can pan out. It could either be:
System 1:
Kill certain monsters(Iron Golems, Zombies, cave spiders, testificates, any mob that could find a way to get mini-cogs) to obtain Mini-Cogs. Mini-cogs are like EXP bubbles. You need a certain amount of them to upgrade your item of choice. Maybe the addition of more mobs that can drop cogs like trolls that gather metal and stuff.
System 2:
Constructing certain components for a certain upgrade for a certain weapon.
Here is some facts you might like about the Upgrade table:
The upgrades actually make the weapon look different depending on the upgrade
You can rename a weapon once it has been upgraded
You can have 2-3 upgrade for different areas on the weapon
YOU KNOW WHICH UPGRADE YOU ARE GOING TO GET!
Since this would be a counter for the enchantment, I feel the need to compare them for you.
Enchanting:
1:The Bad
[]You don't know which upgrade you are going to get
[]Object has less durability than when it would originally have been(Part of the suggestion)
[] Only 1 Upgrade, depending on what you get
2: The Good
[] Enchanting effect are alot more potent and stronger
[] You have a chance of getting a really powerful enchantment
[]Has unrealistic powers(fire resistance,etc.)
[] Upgrade Tiers
[] Instant enchantment
Upgrading:
1:The Bad
[] The upgrade effect is not as strong as the enchantment
[] Putting certain upgrades on your armor will slow you down a little
[]If you didnt get any upgrades that make the object lighter the upgrades will make it slower
[] No upgrade tiers
[] It takes time to upgrade items(like smelting in a furnace)
2: The Good
[]You Know what upgrade you are getting
[] Upgrade makes the upgradeable last a little longer
[]You can rename your upgraded items for the sake of aesthetics! (such as the chopper or sunblock,It would be good for adventure maps!)
[] Multiple upgrades(depending on the area of the other upgrades), and you can add them anytime you want
[] Does not need library books to get high-grade upgrades
List of Upgrades:
-----------------------------------------------------------
Reinforced Coat(Armor Upgrade, leather only):
Effects:
Reduces Arrow and sword slash damage by 30%
Negative effects:
Makes you 10% slower
------------------------------------------------------------
Light Frame(Gold,Iron, and diamond armor upgrade)
Effects:
Makes you move more faster in armor than you already would(if they were to implement armor hindering your agility)
Negative Effects:
does 40% less protection than it would normally
--------------------------------------------------------------
Hollow Handle:{All tier sword upgrade)
Effects:
would make swinging sword significantly faster
Negative Effects:
Would decrease the durability significantly, and reduce damage by 10%
----------------------------------------------------------------
Heavy Frame(Bow/arrow upgrade)
Effects:
increases damage significantly, makes arrow go at a longer range
Negative Effects:
Arrow moves slower
---------------------------------------------------------------
Small Sight(Bow upgrade)
Effects:
Adds a small iron sight on the side of the bow, kind of like the one in thief:deadly shadows :3
And you can zoom in a little more and the sight is built to measure the elevation of the arrow
No negative effects
---------------------------------------------------------------
Serrated Edge(wood/stone/iron sword upgrade)
Effects:
Serrates the edge of the blade which makes it do alot more damage than it normally would
Negative Effects:
Would make swing recovery slower since the serrated edge blades would get stuck in the flesh
---------------------------------------------------------------
Tar-Tip(Arrow Upgrade)(can upgrade 64 arrows)
Effects:
Slows your enemies down and hinders their sprinting
No negative effects
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Smooth-Cut(Bow Upgrade)

------------------------------------------------------------------
Heavy Frame(All armor except leather)(great for tanking!)

Negative effects:
Stops sprinting and slows you down
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Thin-Blade(All sword Tier)
Effects:
Increases the speed and damage of the sword
makes it look like a MOTHER****ING KATANA!
Negative Effects:
Reduced Durabilty
No chance of crits even when you jump
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Feel free to suggest more! Make sure they're balanced.
Some upgrades upgrade different parts of the armor or weapon, and they effect how they look!
Say if you upgraded the weapon hilt with a hollow handle you can still get the serrated blades upgrade as well, etc.
The overlay would be similiar to the enchantment table's, but you know which upgrade you are getting. Upgrades will also be permanent
Please leave a comment on what you think, or what small addition you have for this!
If this gets enough popularity I will add pictures of the layout and such!
I also have this though of RP themed servers having a war between people who practice magic and people who hate magic and want to stomp it out with their technology
NOTE: NONE OF THIS WILL LOOK LIKE SPACEMARINEWARHAMMER LASER GUNS OR WHATEVER THESE CRAZY KIDS PLAY THESE DAYS.
Oh, and if you think this is against the "theme" of minecraft just think of the TNT,jukeboxes, bookshelves(back in the medieval age they didn't have alot of books), various dimensions, fantasy-like creatures, etc. Minecraft is it's own unique theme. I'm fine with alot of things as long as they are not modern weapons and lasers and other ridiculous things.
TL;DR:
No TL;DR, just read it.
Plus Cogs would be added to the game and they would have a purpose. The crafting table would look animated with a little window and you can see the gear spinning :3
No thank you. Calling an enchantment table something else solely for the purpose of consoling people who don't like the aesthetics of it does not add any gameplay value, nor does it make the game any more fun. Yes, it's different, but it's essentially the same thing, making it fairly useless.
Also, the crafting recipe is far too expensive.
I fixed the recipe, but it isn't exactly the same thing as the enchantment table. This is more of a opposite of it since you actually know what upgrade you are getting. But this was supposed to be an alternative and it was supposed to be a cheaper version of the table for those who want to upgrade their items but don't want to spend EXP and save it for higher tier items. Not all of us want to spend hours looking for diamond to mine obsidian when we could save the obsidian for a nether portal.

That would be cool but thats WAY overpowered. enchantment tables are better and like you said Minecraft has its own uniquie theme.
*inset spam here*
It's not overpowered. Enchantments are more potent but lowers the durability slightly. Upgrade tables slightly increase the durability depending on which upgrade you get. There are also negative effects for some upgrades unlike enchantments. I have a feeling you didn't read as much as you should have.
i like your intentions, but there is a problem
minecraft is already a fantasy game (zombies, walking skeletons, creepers, slime...) so why should enchanting bother players
also an anvil with a simple upgrade system would be a better option in my opinion

I kinda thought it was a bit expensive, what do you think of iron ingots replacing the iron blocks?

Added a poll
Added some differences
Added how cogs should be added for this
