As most of you know, in a recent snapshot map mechanics were changed so that all maps aligned to a grid. They also added item frames so you could place maps on a wall. Naturally, the two of these together means you could make a huge map of the entire server, provided it had limited border. However, I have a few ideas that could even further increase map usage.
Marking
You should be able to mark a map so you could find your way back to a cool terrain feature or enemy base. You could mark a map by combining a feather and dye to make a (color) quill. These quills could be used not only for marking, but also for colored text in books. To mark a map, put it in an item frame and right click the map. This will open a menu not unlike for writing on signs or books, but in place of the sign, there is the map. Simply click where you want to mark. A dot the color of the quill would appear there and a text box would appear above it. Then you simply write what you want this point to be called and it will appear on the map.
Of course, the text would clutter up the map too much, so only the dot would be there. To see the text, simply right click with the map in your hand (or on the wall) and the same screen as before would come up. Then mouse over the dot, and the text will appear.
(side note: quills should have limited uses. 10 uses, then it becomes a normal feather.
Multiplayer Display
This one's not nearly as complicated. When you're in Multiplayer, the map should show if there's anyone else in the area of the map. This will make it easier to find friends, help or food. It will also let you know if attackers are moving in. Wouldn't it be awesome to be in a bunker under your base, seeing a display showing people moving in, and ordering an attack.
Full Block
This one's been suggested before, but I'll say it again. While I'd like to have that awesome control room that I've mentioned before, it would be hard to use because of the gap between the maps. This brings me to my final idea. When you put a map in an item frame, the frame disappears and the map takes up the entire side of the block. This way, if you put multiple maps side by side, they will connect, and show a fluid image of the entire area.

These are awesome ideas, I wouldn't have thought of most of these. However, I have some more ideas too:
1. The ability for all blocks to be displayed on maps. Currently if you build a giant epic castle made of cobblestone, it won't, afaik, display it.
2. There also should be void-showing support for custom worlds.
3. They should add support for nether/end maps, or at least the ability to create them with an external program.
1: I support markings.
2: This exists, but only if a player has a map in their inventory. It sounds a little OP if all the time.
3: I support full blocks, too. (Technically it'd have to be an entity not a block)

Yes but people won't know where my base is if they cant see my character, thus their is no need to look out for them, so no, just no...

All blocks will be shown in the next update. (at least all blocks you have enough of to make a castle)
Void I agree with
You can have a map in the nether/end, but it's not that useful because with the nether you just have the ceiling, and the end is too small to have a map be useful.

Actually, with the new update, unless your base is completely underground without even a single part of it above, anyone with a map of the area could find it.

Yes, but that would involve them having gotten reasonably close to your base. They'd likely see the entrance if it could be viewed from a map.
Magic radar probably isn't the best way to go.

I don't know how to deal with this

I like it how ever i am a bit unsure about the multiplayer thing.
