Ok, so we all know what hardcore is: That final choice for your world, the one that most people avoid because of a very obvious reason: You mess up once, BOOM. Your done. You get that ugly game over screen and no choice to try again. But lets be honest, here: The main reason you die on hardcore is because of a silly mistake, like accidently falling off a cliff or getting ambushed by a creeper, not like how normal human survival would be, starvation, dehydration, or overall... Failure.
Of course, a thirst bar would make minecraft a bit difficult (And, i know im not supposed to say this, but there is a mod for that), but what about starvation? Getting food in minecraft is way too easy. And come to think of it, if you have a bed you can avoid the night monsters altogether. So basically: Hardcore needs to be harder.
1. Mobs need advanced AI
I think that all of minecraftia could benefit from this. All that mobs do (Besides the Ghast and Blaze, the two smartest in the game) Is attack you untill you die or they die. They do not dodge, they do not attempt to make their life go on any longer, they just scratch or shoot or bite untill one of you is down.
I think that Creepers, for on, should actually try to stalk you. If you turn around, they should try to hide. They would only explode if they get a good spot where it would be difficult for you to life (Ex. Mining a bit of iron or Cutting a tree) and then they would attack. That would be scary as hell, making a more satisfying death (Yea, it sounds corny, but when i play a game i want to die in an awesome way.)
Skeletons should be able to shoot through windows in hardcore and have better aim. Thats all, really. Mayby slowly walking backwards if you approach them?
Zombies... Are actually ok. Mayby spawning in groups of 3-5.
Spiders should go a bit faster, mayby enough to catch up with you while you whilst running (But they still are killable in 2-3 shots)
2. Food needs to be harder to get.
Why do you never see anyone dying of starvation on minecraft? Because its a very hard thing to do. You can go outside your house and kill a random pig any day. You can find some seeds and have a thriving wheat farm by the next day. So really, why even bother with food?
Basically, to fix this in hardcore, two things should happen: Animals should spawn less and you should only be able to get 1 seed from wheat plants (a 50/50 chance at that.)
That i seriously think would fix the entire food problem.
I am running out of time, so ill stop here for now. IF you want to comment on what i got so far, go ahead. Ill finish it later.
No, on every video game that has a hardcore mode it just make 1 death= Deleted game. it doesn't need to be harder, just have the 1 death rule, plus it is to hard with your idea
AI could certainly use a buff, but I don't agree with the food nerf. Farms should be self-sustaining- otherwise, you'd spend all of your time running around looking for seeds and none really doing anything much.
Let me predict your next suggestion- no beds. That would slow the game down massively, but it'd also cut down on surface mobs. A simple fix would be to automatically spawn mobs when you to go sleep in Hardcore. That would simulate a night's worth of spawning without forcing you to sit around and stare out the window for eight minutes or so.
Yes! Hardcore mode isn't hardcore at all, because despite the 1-death penalty, you aren't actualy any more
likely to die in hardcore right now. Make hardcore hardcore!
Anyway, I think that game difficulty needs a buff in general. Everything has just gotten easier and easier (along with my skill getting better and better) with no added difficulty. The mob AI did get improved, but it also got worse since the mobs that got the treatment can only see you if a part of you has the same Y coordinate as them (as in, if they're on a two block high pillar you have to jump for a skeleton to notice you).
So, while I like this idea, I think that it needs to apply to hard mode and it needs to be even more difficult on hardcore.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
I think the problem now does not lie with the game mechanics, but instead, it lies with personal preference.
Some people like Hardcore mode as it is, others think it is too easy, while some believe it is too hard.
I was thinking, instead of changing core concepts of the game (Like food nerf, etc), Hardcore mode should be changed to Challenge Mode. What happens in this mode is simple, it has the same rules as Survival, but you get the options of toggling certain stats and game rules that suit your needs.
For example, if you are a truely hardcore gamer, you would choose the Challenge Mode and enable the options that say "1 Death Penalty", "3x More Mob Spawn", etc, and maybe other options such as "Unable to Craft Bed" or "Always Hostile Endermen".
Or, if you are a professional gamer but just looking for a decent challenge, you would only enable some of those options avaliable, based on what your preference/taste/likings are.
This way, players will be able to challenge themselves appropriately, and not continously whine about how difficult/easy Hardcore Mode is.

That's a brilliant idea. But something like that would better suit the additional world options.
