I was thinking of this recently, magic in Minecraft. It could take 3 diamonds and two sticks to make a staff. Charge it at enchanting table with either Redstone or emerald dust then you could have a certain number of charges depending on the spell and the amount of stuff you put in it. I figure spells at first would be a simple fire spell at a distance at first. Idk what other spells there would be. Any suggestions?
Mojang have said that minecraft will never have magic using staffs, scrolls, etc.
Magic will only include things like brewing and enchanting.

I hate people who complain. I hate spiders. I hate people who own an Xbox One. I hate people who like sandbox games. I hate people who like first person shooters. I hate people who like explosions. I hate people who like video games. I hate people who are hateful. I hate people that don't like spam. I hate people who like cake. I hate people who type in proper grammar and spell words properly on the internet. I hate hypocrites.
Enchantments are the only form of magical weapons the player should have access to. This would feel too generic.
Also, just to point out, potions aren't magic, you can make most of them in real life.

No, there has never, ever been a sandbox game with a story or ending... except Grand Theft Auto... and Saints Row... and Red Dead Redemption... and Crack Down... and Assassins Creed...

Where would I find this article or statement? I would like to read it.
I did search but maybe not hard enough. I came up with a mod that has magic, rpg forum posts, and a lot of random stuff. I didn't really see anything That earned more than a breeze through.
Why is it should only be enchanting and potion making (though potions may not be magic)
I feel that if it is balanced why not? Like 3 different spells light, fireball, and explosive. Light could be made of Redstone each Redstone dust could be a charge for a light that would last in the casted spot for 1 hour or one minecraft days.
Fireball would be flint. A full stack of 64 flint would cast 16fireballs. The fire would be into a 3x3 area and hit at whatever distance. So if improperly used they could start a forest fire or hurt the player)
Explosive would be made with 1 TNT and 8redstone. It would be a 1:1 ratio. TNT at a distance.
Emerald sun? 1 emerald for 1 spell that lights the area with sunlight.

Is there anything wrong with that?
Notch said on his Twitter that there wasn't going to be projectile magic in Minecraft, and I doubt Jeb is going to defy the game's creator's wish like that.
Also, with the way you described it, all those spells can already be accomplished with regular items.

going to have to ask for the source of that statementalso I have been designing a magic system using staffs / books that I plan on making balanced but varied and fun
