I would greatly appreciate the ability to save and access worlds on an external hard drive.
I have my own reasons for wanting this, but I can think of several situations (families sharing a computer, and one sibling is a troll, for example) where being able to simply keep your world off a computer completely would be advantageous.
Another reason would be being able to more easily transport older, larger worlds to play on friends computers, but they may not have enough space on their computer to load the world. (Granted, the only reason that should happen is if you're KurtJMac, but I digress.)
It doesn't really harm the game, and I'm not asking for it "NAO!"
I'm not even really asking for it in 1.4. I know there's a lot more bugs and more important features that could, and SHOULD take priority. The lighting, rendering, and Modding API code should most definitely take priority over this.
But down the line, on a slow day, after 1.4 or even 1.5, I would appreciate seeing the functionality implemented. I know not many will use it, but it's still a function that some, including myself, will love to see.
I, myself, have an external drive that I keep with me, but moving my world every time I want to play, then moving it back to the external becomes a bit of a chore. The ability to play directly from the external would definitely save some hassle for people in my situation.
Thankfully, I have siblings that won't touch my external drive, but i have logged into copies of my world that are left on the computer to find the place MCedited with a double-layer of TNT, and a pressure plate trap around me.
I found out later that they attempted to back up the original so that I wouldn't get angry, but it was improperly backed up.
This is why I don't trust my family, personally. They didn't know I kept the file I work on on my expensive 'do-not-touch', password locked external hard drive.
While I like the idea of being able to backup worlds to an external drive, I think that playing directly from that drive is a bad idea.
The reason I say this is that flash drives have a limited number of write cycles so the constant writing which the game normally uses as a safety feature would quickly wear out the flash drive and cause it to fail.
But being able to easily backup and restore games to an external device would be very useful.
