About the land claim thing, although i think being able to claim random patches of land shouldn't be allowed, i'm for having the option for players to petition an ingame GM to designate an area as a settlement. This would stop unwanted or unfriendly players from building in the settlement and if maps get implemented then its name would appear on it. Of course if the city got attacked then the attacking players could take over it.
I think land claim flags should be allowed, but only on the same amount of space as a starter house, but the flag would take up space and be able to be taken over by either a group of players quickly or by a single player over a longer period of time.
I would like to point out that if people want to make swastikas in MP, why stop them? If it makes you angry, tear it down and kill him.
If someone is just randomly killing, well that's there choice. There really isn't any griefing.
I think there should be no sort of protection for your blocks at all. Instead, there should be alerts for when someone dies (also saying what/who killed them) and maybe also for when someone takes something out of someone else's chest, but only in a somewhat close radius; that way, members of the same village would likely come to stop the intruder.

Are you people really this naive? THINK.
What's going to happen if people have the ability, at any time, to destroy blocks? They're going to do so. Some of them, just because it might irritate you.
They'd just wait until you log off, take all your stuff, burn anything they can, steal the torches, and move on. Having a building more impressive than a smelted-stone cliff face would mean that anyone who sees it would instantly view it as a target. Every time you log off, anything you make is basically forfeit.

Well, first of all, Rude.
Second, We don't know how logging off will work yet, so thats not a point. Any if you make a big smelted-stone cliff that everyone can see, thats your problem!

Tbf we ALREADY also have a mode for creating cool stuff, it's called creative. . . Survival is about survivng. Sure in Co-Op you'll make cool stuff, but why would you in PvP?

My point exactly; they would start destroying, and the town would slaughter them. Even if you were logged off, that would happen. If you live alone, that's your own fault.
I agree with Ajax, your stuff should only get protection from people, traps, and mods that the host has on his/her server. I really don't like the idea of anything that is default for the game making stuff harder to destroy, or making impossible to build on certain things. That said, I will probably end up hosting servers on normal sized, square, floating maps to encourage equal amounts of co-op and PvP, as people will either fight over the land, or cooperate to colonize it.

I disagree with how so many people seem to be viewing MP Survival's goals as being COMPETITIVE. This isn't an FPS, it isn't capture the flag, it isn't last man standing. It's a game where you build stuff.

This may be a fad, but I love dragons, so why the heck not?
So MP Creative is about surviving? I don't know the names are pretty much self-explanatory I believe, sure you build, but you have to survive above all else.

...You support randomly killing people, yet get butthurt because I'm rude to you? And there aren't exactly a lot of ways that logging off CAN work. You disappear. The map remains. If there is some sort of opt-in PVP wargames, then yes, destruction is tactics. If you run across a logged-off players stuff and destroy a few hours of work because you think it's funny, that is griefing.

Because building something without an unlimited supply is more of a challenge. A huge construction in creative means little. All the blocks appeared instantly, with no effort or time invested. A large castle in a survival server would be impressive because the stone was all mined and moved.

...I think you are overestimating server populations, player cooperation, and time-logged-in. People will spend far more time offline than online, and play with near-same-timezone people. This will leave things unprotected for MOST of the time on 24/7 servers.
Hell, even EVE online knows that it takes a long time for people to respond, even if they are notified instantly of incursions. Players are going to run around mining, harvesting, and building. They are not going to stand guard constantly, just on the off chance that someone comes by, and it would be crappy gameplay to force that.

To me, "survival" brings up images of a guy in the woods, surviving the environment.
Not somebody in his base, surviving a bunch of people who just want to kill him because.
