If it has the advantage over obsidian due to being moved by pistons and whatnot, then it's not just a decoration block.
Same point as above.
Like I said, the minute you give something that can be made out of obsidian in a 1:1 value that can be moved by pistons, the thing you just built made Obsidian obsolete besides from making portals.
not entirely. are logs obsolete because you can make them into planks?
Great suggestion!
Obsidian is almost useless, but this would make it so much more worth it to find Obsidian, since you can make awesome-looking Blocks.
Diamonds for you!

Ok, you have a point, but if you can make a piston-moveable block that's explosive resistant, that's a bit overpowered.
not really. the whole point of this is that obsidian is by no means difficult to acquire, just time consuming. dig into any cave directly under a lake/ocean, and chances are you'll find a ton of obsidian where lava and water meet. or just grab a water bucket and find some surface lava in a jungle biome and make your own. the only difficult part about obsidian is the mining of it, which isnt a challenge, its an annoyance.
the idea is that tiles would be processed obsidian. something you've already acquired and processed to make more useful. it's not completely overpowered, since it has downsides. it won't increase your obsidian supply for things that need to be made of it. enchanting tables, nether portals, beacons, and whatever else was added in 1.3 that uses it. it only works as a building block, and having it multiply and become more ornate at the same time finally makes obsidian a reasonable choice for building.
but having it explosive-proof and piston movable at the same time makes it possible to build redstone contraptions never before possible. sealable cannons, explosive trash disposal, etc.
but of course the downside to it is that on servers it's not griefer proof as regular obsidian is, it's not a good security measure.
As in how would it exist within the theoretical laws of physics in minecraft?
it would be just like turning a one cubic meter log into four cubic meters of planks. cut the solid mass into pieces that fit together to make a hollow mass.
No no no. When I ask "what the hell are tiles?", I mean "what the hell are tiles?"
We know what slabs are: they're half-blocks that you can make shallow pseudo-staircases out of, or stack to make full blocks.
We know what pressure plates are: they're objects that are placed on top of blocks and produce an electric current when stepped on.
We know what wooden fence posts, iron bars, and glass panes are: special blocks that detect adjacent blocks and change appearance accordingly to produce the illusion of "thin" fences, windows, grates, etc.
We DON'T know what a "tile" is, at least in Minecraft terms. You haven't explained it. You're just throwing it around as if we all know what it means, as if we already have wooden tiles and stone tiles and sandstone tiles and netherrack tiles and we're just extending the concept to obsidian.
basically i had an idea to make obsidian quite a bit more useful, by suggesting a "refined" form.
clay's refined form is brick
a log's refined form is wood
stone's refined form is stone brick
sand's refined form is glass, etc.
Those end products are not even remotely comparable. Brick is basically a decorative construction block. Wood has gazillions of uses, including use as fuel and as a material for crafting tools. Stone brick is a decorative construction block. Glass isn't even the only "refined" form of sand now that we have sandstone.
No no no. When I ask "what the hell are tiles?", I mean "what the hell are tiles?"
oh, right i see what you're saying now.
obsidian tiles won't be a new model, just a new block. it's still block shaped, and acts like a block in terms of relation to blocks around it, height, bulk, etc. it just has a different texture, and different properties. but the model is still the basic cube.

I really wish Mojang would implement this idea into the game rather than it just being a mod. Obsidian does need more uses and options, even if it is as limited as Netherbricks. Having Stairs and Slabs would be a vast optional improvement on these blocks, and I love the Tile designs you've made.

actually, being explosive resistant would make it a lot more useful than just nether brick.
i imagine the main use would be to make explosion proof piston doors, cannons, and the like.

Oh, so it's just a decorative construction block? Okay. In that case, I fully support this idea, as it would allow my black castles to have more brick-like textures instead of looking "bubbly".

I also demand obsidian stairs and slabs.
indeed. not individual tile models or anything like that.
I have a Spoon. Your argument is invalid.
