Let's all be honest, you could stand in Minecraft for 100 hours and nothing would happen.
Let's change that shall we?
During Minecraft events, unfortunate things will happen that will motivate the character to use items.
Solar Eclipse: A Solar eclipse is an event that can happen instead of sunrise. During a solar eclipse, the entire day will act as nighttime, causing mobs to spawn until the day and night has ended. The solar eclipse cannot be skipped by bed, but the normal nights can.
Appearance: The main appearance will be that it's dark outside, but the sun will also appear black. Happens 1 out of 300 times.
Encourages: Players to light up their perimeter.
Lunar Eclipse: A Lunar eclipse is an event that can happen instead of night time. During this event, all mobs will be buffed and you cannot skip night, and to add to it, the darkness goes all the way to 0 and your clocks and compasses will go crazy.
Appearance: The moon will become brown and everything will be darker. Happens 1 out of 100 times.
Encourages: Players to be careful where they are, and to craft maps.
Famine: During this event, you will have a reverse "looting" effect where you get less food from mobs that lasts all day. Your hunger will also drain 1.2X faster. Droppings from crops will not be changed, nor will food saturation.
Appearance: Your character will have black particle effects coming off of him/her. Happens 1 out of 200 times every morning.
Encourages: To build bigger farms.
Fatigue: This effect is triggered if you do not sleep within 3 Minecraft days. The event will cause you to walk and punch slower. The effect is strengthened if you do not sleep on the 4th day.
Appearance: As the effect currently is.
Encourages: To sleep more often.
Severe Storm: An extreme storm that causes a lot of lightning, much like a normal storm. along with tons of lightning, a block at layer 64 will randomly get a water block every 3 minutes. The storms can 12 minutes.
Appearance: Darker sky than normal storms, a lot of rumbling noises, and night will be at lighting level 0. Happens 1 out of 100 instead of a normal rain.
Encourages: To build higher structures.
Tectonic Shift: A extremely rare event that will "bounce" all entities 1 block into the air. The origin of the event starts at the player, and will do 2 points of damage, as well as knocking off torches(not redstone), paintings, display cases, and a random single stack from a chest within a 10 block radius of the player.
Appearance: There will be a loud lightning sound, and the character will be bounced into the air, and items on walls will fall down. They happen 1 out of 500 times instead of a rain.
Encourages: The use of glowstone and jack-lanterns.
Please comment nicely, don't troll, and give me your opinion on the ideas.
I don't know, I don't like the idea of in-game events that force you to sleep, or use other sources of light instead of torches.
I also don't like the idea of tectonic shifts. It seems more like an annoying natural grief than anything. It would be annoying if you are mining and your paintings and framed items fall off of the walls and despawn.
I hate most natural disaster suggestions. But in this one, only in the last two the world griefs itself. I support non grief ones, as long as they're more challenging then annoying. Fatigue is more annoying than anything, and is no challenge at all, so I don't support it. I support eclipses and famine.

Just my opinion
Like i said;
only things within 10 blocks of you will fall off and bounce.
( That way your entire world doesn't update 572 entities )

Alright! Thanks!
Just for you to know, I throw out ideas to ask the community if a certain element is fitting for Minecraft.
Honestly, I wasn't very sure about the Severe Storms.
