Lantern Lantern is a portable light source that can be either carried by player, or hung on a lantern hook. The time remaining for lantern will not stop if put away.
The lantern uses the same rendering methods that flowers use to acheive 3D effect.

They always said they planned to make torches burn out after a time and then add in lanterns as a permanent light source. I always thought it was a good idea, but I guess most of the rest of the community didn't like it and so Mojang abandoned the idea.
I'm sorry to say man, but mobile light is too buggy/laggy. and lanturns have been suggested by Notch evan. it just wont work, use the search next time before you post. altho i will say you did put some time into this. good work.

Actually it was too buggy to have a mobile light source

I didn't say anything about mobile light. I was talking merely about the idea of making torches limited use and then adding lanterns as a more advanced recipe permanent light source.

They did add lanterns. They called them redstone lamps now.

Yeah I know, those just aren't what I thought they'd be. Don't get me wrong, I definitely like the redstone lantern blocks, but I always assumed that the lanterns we'd get would work more like current torches.
Yes, I really want a portable light source. I kind of think letting it emit light even if in inventory is a little overpowered though. Light is VERY useful, and some people take it for granted. Lanterns would be the kind of thing that you take on all mining expeditions, like pickaxes.

I'm not sure if this would be worth its own article, but I was thinking lanterns could be made by placing torches in glass bottles, allowing them to be hung from ceilings and placed underwater in addition to normal Torch behavior. They wouldn't be efficient to make in mass due to the need for glass, though.
