I've been playing Minecraft single-player for a while and I've come up with a few suggestions. Here's one of them.
Why not allow 9 vines to be crafted into a length of rope? Rope would be used for rappelling down overhangs.
Clicking on the top of a block next to a drop while holding rope would attach the end of the rope to the block. Walking off the edge of the drop would cause the player to climb down the rope just like climbing down a ladder. Using the "walk forward" key would cause the player to climb up. Moving the mouse would cause the player to rotate their view while hanging from the rope.
The distance the player could climb would depend on the number of units of rope the player was holding. One unit of rope would be required for each block the player climbs down. The rope would be automatically taken from the player's inventory as required.
If the player's feet touch a solid surface, the player automatically lets go of the rope.
If the player runs out of rope, the player stops going down and hangs on to the end of the rope (the player does not fall just because of running out of rope).
If the player jumps while at the end of his rope (pun intended), the player lets go of the rope and falls. Otherwise jumping while holding rope is the same as jumping while on a ladder.
Breaking the rope would require shears and would return the broken piece and all pieces below the broken piece to the player's inventory (the player is assumed to have reeled in the rope after cutting it).
Advantages: Another use for vines, and allows players to more easily reach some areas in caves.
Related idea: Allow 4 or 5 iron to be crafted into "spikes". An iron spike must be placed on a block for the rope to be attached to. Spikes can only be placed next to a drop of 3 or more blocks.
Spike (5 iron):
Spike (4 iron):
Breaking a spike automatically breaks a rope attached to the spike and returns as much of the rope as possible to the player's inventory (as above, the player is assumed to have reeled in the rope after detaching it from the spike).
Using string is actually a good idea. Once you find abandoned mineshafts, string from webs becomes pretty common and making rope from the string would make all that string useful.
Well, we have ladders for climbing down blocks, and it is honestly less expensive to make a crapload of ladders. Maybe it can be used for something else?
I think it would be awesome to have this as a climbable block that dosn't need a block behind it.
I was thinking about remaking Crew Expendable from CoD4, but ladders are not going to work.

I hate people who complain. I hate spiders. I hate people who own an Xbox One. I hate people who like sandbox games. I hate people who like first person shooters. I hate people who like explosions. MrDiamonds and Fnoop understand what I'm getting at. Rope would be great for dealing with overhangs.
Also, I believe you can fall off the bottom of ladders and it would be handy to have something you can climb up and down on without the danger of accidentally falling off the end.

What do others think? Is this a worthwhile idea?
