I've had an idea floating around in my head for a while for a new biome called the "Great Mountains" biome. As the name suggests, it would consist of very large mountains, much larger than the current "mountains" biome, reaching up to 100-175 blocks above sea level. These mountains, rather than being being sporadically placed, as the mountains in the "mountains" biome are, would be a mountain "range", difficult to cross, but with some canyons connecting the two sides. Other canyons, rather than connecting the two sides, could run up into the mountains, with streams coming down out of them.
These mountains could include sharp, snow-covered peaks, deep caverns and underground lakes, and even more mines, if desired.
Mountain ranges like this could allow for many new types of building experiences. Here's just a few that I've thought of, though the point is that the possibilities are endless: Mountain-top monasteries, medieval mountain-side palaces, observatories, ski resorts, volcanoes, Machu Picchu, Tesla's laboratory, Frankenstein's castle, Minas Tirith, Minas Morgul, Mordor (not very Mordor-ey without the mountains around it), and if you're interested in making modern cities, you could build dams, reservoirs, hydro-electric power plants, and so on...
Due to the inherently large nature of this biome, it would probably need to be limited to the large biomes maps, and possibly limited to an option in the world creation settings.
Other random ideas for this biome:
1. Monastery-villages with monks instead of villagers.
2. Abandoned mining-town villages near open mineshafts.
Anyway, just thought I'd throw this out there and see what other people think.
This is an excellent idea, and would certainly make the world more interesting. I can imagine finding villages or monasteries up in the mountains would be quite a treat, too.
I could support this idea. I definitely have thought that mountains in Minecraft could use an overhaul ever since the build height was increased, and this doesn't seem like it would be too difficult to implement.
