Proposal
Add a new mob, a swamp monster, based on the Loch Ness Monster and similar large underwater creatures, or based on the crocodile. Hostile, but doesn't despawn.
Reasons
Having a monster swim around your castle to guard against invaders is just cool.
Swamps need a reason to exist and be visited (or avoided). This proposal adds one more piece of interest.
A day-time danger is interesting.
Possible Details Size: 0.5 wide x 3 long x 1 high with head higher than body, and they might bend around corners.
Spawn: Like farm animals, but only spawn in water in swamp biomes, and very rare. Maybe only one or two per biome. I want them to be hard to find, and a surprise when they find you.
Persistent: They are persistent like farm animals. This means if you can draw him to your castle, you have your own moat monster.
Swimming: The body should be below water and the head barely above the water. They swim slowly except fast when attacking, but a good boater can usually escape. When they attack they rise above the water on the victim. Water splashing sounds as they swim. Can swim up flowing water.
Hostile: They are hostile to any mob in the water, or on the shore near them. They will get out of the water, but will not jump or climb up blocks. They break boats.
Drops: Killing them yields some useful item, no idea what.
Breeding: Breedable by feeding live cows, but be careful because if you get too close they might eat you instead. (See point 5).
Strength: 20 health, 6 hit strength (on hard). Exp: 5.
The key points are: hostile, water creature that spawns and persists like farm animals. That makes it useable for defense and traps and decoration. All other details are optional.
How does the rest of this forum feel about something like this? Is there a certain type of swimmer you hope to see? Would you like an aggressive pet? Would you like a bit of danger in the water?
I like this idea, and it should drop 0-3 of a new item called a diamond scale on death, which you can craft 9 of them by putting 1 diamond into the crafting table and the diamond scales can be crafted back into diamonds by putting 9 in a crafting table.
Maybe it could also drop a green scale, and you can surround a green scale with gold nuggets to get a trophy, or surround it with diamond scales to get a trophy trap (it looks like a trophy, but emits a redstone signal when touched).
I wonder if jaws would be a nice drop? Something that can be converted into a snap-shut trap that injures a mob slightly and holds them in place. But maybe that's too OP. I can't think of a better way though.
Yes. Just yes. How long I have wanted a creature that I could use to guard my castle against invading players, and making it water-bound prevents it from being overpowered. I love this idea.
Thanks Koopa. The other thing I'd like to do is make a pit trap with these at the bottom. Players may die, but their stuff flows down to safety for collection. Better than lava that way, and kinda cool/scary to walk a bridge over top them.
"soul" is a bizarre drop idea, not like anything else in minceraft and not what I expect of a beast. Also an effect only good in swamps is almost useless because who stays in swamps?

Like, you could have a lab assistant zombie pigman, or a pet squid, or something.
Since you would be able to toggle that tag with something like NBTexplorer, it would be great for boss fights in adventure maps.

when used (right click) you have strength 3 and regeneration 1 for the next 45 seconds.
the catch the effect only happens while in a swamp biome.
if you leave the swamp biome you losse the effects.
ALSO you can feed the orb thingy to your wolfie. your dog will look more green-ish and will be faster and have more attack strength in swamp biomes ;D
