As of the future 1.4 update leather armor will be dye-able. I was thinking perhaps leather armor could be worn underneath other armors so that if your iron/gold/diamond armor breaks you have the leather armor as back up armor. And since gold tools can mine faster, gold armor should either give you higher movement speed or faster health recovery or both. Also I think golden swords should keep it's durability but do a little more damage than diamond(again the faster theme).
Edit: I just had another thought about golden armor, maybe each piece could give off different abilities. Golden boots and leggings giving faster movement and breast plate and helmet giving faster health recovery.
No support, it wouldn't add much to the game at all, if you want spare armour, pack a spare pair in your inventory. Or just change the set over when they get low. As for the gold armour, still no. This is the point of enchantments and potions.

I completely disagree, why even have gold and leather armor in the game? Do you use these items ever? Now you can dye leather armor; well what's the point in that if it is the weakest and least durable? Moreover, add to the fact that it is much more time consuming to craft than any other armor.

Leather armour is in the game for a very simple reason. For players to have access to armour before they get set up, start a mine and find enough iron for some armour. The reasons for gold armour and died armour are pretty much vanity IMO. They look freakin amazing!

Well I've started many worlds as I play hardcore mode and I usually can find enough iron for a full set of armor before I even find any cows. As a matter of fact, I found a dungeon before I found any cows in my latest game which means I have hardly any use for leather at all.

You must get lucky, as I never find enough iron for a full set b4 I find enough leather.

There is no point in leather armor or gold armor or even gold swords existing as there is no advantage in crafting them. If these items were taken out of the game, it would hardly change the gameplay at all.

I head in a random direction in search of cows right away and I do a little cave exploring along the way. Iron is easy to aquire via exploring caves.
yeah, but finding 24 in one vein is pretty rare!
Pickle
I don't find 24 in one vein, but I can find over 24 in a relatively small cave system.
