Let me put it this way, if what u said about the new drop rates, 3-5 leather each cow. I would at minimum need to kill 15 cows for those 45 books i need... Which is very easy... Too easy! I believe that they added leather to craft books cause so it would still be "kinda hard" to get a max enchanting room, even tho they reduced max lvl on enchanting. Cause lets face it, its easy to get 5 diamonds.
And i dont think they should change the drop rate to obtain leather cause its not that hard to get leather in later stages of the game! But in the early stage of the game, its not worth roaming around the world to get a leather armor, when i can, as some of the people stated, get a better armor in the same amount of time. So i think they just should change the recipe to get leather armor.
I mean lets play with fantasy here!
In lategame i got atleast 10 cows in my base, which i bread as often i can! Which means i get 5 new cows every 5 min, and it takes for them to grow about 20 minutes. So... I need to breed them 3 times. To get 45 leather.
But if they would make the recipe for leather armor cheaper like i said 12 leather for a set, enchanting, and frames will be untouched.
I suck at explaining... like alot!
But basically i dont want Enchanting and Item frames to be affected cause leather armor arent worth getting...
I would say that iron should be a bit rarer, but it's unrelated to the leather issue. Iron ore got way easier to obtain with the increase in caves, while the armor got even stronger with the armor update. I think there needs to be a tweak in both leather drops and iron generation to even things out.
I do agree that cavern generation should be a little less common - like it used to be, but that's a discussion for another thread (and in fact it's going on in other threads as we speak).

I still don't believe that making leather more common will significantly affect enchanting, and I see absolutely no reason for item frames to be considered a rare item either. These are primarily decorative blocks we're talking about here; they should be easy to obtain.
I agree with this, at least the conservative suggestion. Food is supposed to be easy to get - I wouldn't decrease the food source too much, it will make the game more unbalanced. However, I do think that leather armor should be easier to get.

Decreasing the cow's food drop would not unbalance the game. Pigs would still provide all of that particular type of food you could need, and there's plenty of other kinds to choose from as well.
This is a very good idea. I was at first in favour of your "conservative suggested rate", but upon hearing your further arguments, I think you've swayed me into leaning more towards your "ideal suggested rate". Cows drop more leather and less meat, but their meat is somewhat better. Whereas pork is more abundant, but less filling.
If mojang will add more use for leather they could add another step in leather balancing.
If cow is killed make one cow skin.
One cow skin is crafted in to a set number of leathers.
One pig is killed a pig skin will be dropped.
Each cow or pig kill will always grant leather.
One whole set of leather armor shold not take more than half dozen of cow.
It take 24 leather now. In average it takes 12 cows or more.
Let it be a cow skin makes 4 leathers. 6 cows will make a whole set.
Or if adding new step is no no, just let cow drop more leather.
This could be another good way to go about it... There are almost always some rumblings in the Suggestions Forum for a "hunting update" to Minecraft. If such a thing were ever to happen, this system of 'get animal skin, craft to leather' could be expanded to include the deers and boars or what other game animals might be added.
Another common aspect of some hunting suggestions is trophies, wherein you keep and display parts of the animal you killed--generally the head or skin. Tying this together with cows and drops (and possibly this upcoming decorative block update?), I give you: cowhide rugs! Anyone? Anyone?
This all does feed into my thoughts of late about how to better differentiate the various kinds of livestock. I like that sheep graze to regrow wool, and that chickens don't actually need much feed to breed. Making pigs more adaptable in their diet would be a good step. But I'd also like to see something like that with cattle. There should be some kind of in-game mechanism that makes raising cattle and sheep on the same land difficult; they should compete in some way. (Historically, there was considerable strife between cattlemen and sheep herders in the old west, blamed in part on the accusation that sheep overgrazed.)
Some months ago, I made a topic that touched upon the part that I bolded (though, admittedly, that wasn't my true intent with the topic). I only bring it up because it also touches upon the cow/pig imbalance referenced in this suggestion.
Is it against the rules to post suggestion threads to the developers' twitter accounts? If it's not, I'd appreciate someone doing so. I don't have a twitter account myself, but it does seem as if that's where they look the most.
I don't support. I'd hate to see the effort I put into my steak farm go to waste.
And I certainly don't want cows going to the way pigs used to be (not always dropping meat)
Keeping your steak farm is hardly a legitimate reason to oppose a change that would quite obviously improve game balance. Just turn it into a pig farm instead. As for your second comment, if you want meat... again, kill pigs. There's no logical justification for having cows fill the exact same role as pigs in addition to their other roles. It makes pigs completely irrelevant.

It makes no sense for pigs to drop more meat though. Cows are bigger.
There aren't any pigs for miles in my world anyway...
This is probably the most convincing argument to me. But, if cows are bigger, how come they don't drop: brains, tongue, ribs, liver, flanks, rumps, and steaks? Not to mention prairie oysters...

Aha! you have fallen into my carefully prepared trap! For if it is the case that we leave out several cuts of cow for the sake of simplicity, then why should we not forget about cow meat entirely, and instead focus on the fun part of the cow: its delicious extremely utilitarian skin!

With Steak being more difficult to get now, I think it should give a slightly better saturation. Pork and Beef currently both give 12.8 Saturation points, so maybe up Steak to give 14.5 as a nice balancer.
As I've previously explained, the more steak cows continue to produce, the less relevant pigs are. People will still choose to breed cows even if they drop slightly less steak because their other benefits outweigh the reduction in food. Thus, steak needs to either be lowered to almost nothing, or it needs to be altered to work differently than porkchops so that cows and pigs can both drop food without being redundant.

Cows:
0 - 1 Steak, 3 - 5 Leather

1 - 3 Porkchops

WHAT?!
Danger zone.
No thanks.
