It seemed to me to make more sense to try to limit the number of dropped items.
It's not such a big deal given that items now auto-stack while on the ground. From a balance perspective, the items being dropped are of inferior quality and in greater demand, thus a greater quantity is justified.
Decresaing nutrition value of cow steak is good too.
But there is a point in pork to drop only meat. The fact that they only drop meat.
Some people do not want to be bothered with extra item they do not want.
As number and type of item increases, item management becomes bigger aspect of the game.
We have got ender chest. This is one solution to this aspect from mojang.
It comes the time where you don't want to be bothered with extra items.
If you keep them you will have extra chest. If you decides to dump in lave bin, you have to make one and
actually take time to dump them.
no: in my ssp world i spawned with at least 50-60 cows and 1-2 chickens and 1 pig.... the leather was easy to get and now i'm kiting out permanently in leather armor and a stone sword on hard, really i never had to upgrade to iron (unless it is dropped by my zombie spawner (arg too many iron helmets))
One lucky spawn is not sufficient reason to dismiss this idea entirely. In principle, my arguments are sound. 99 times out of 100 you won't find 60 cows - or even 20 for that matter - in the same location, and certainly not at spawn.
Well, you make a good point about sheep and wool, but wool isn't entirely useless after you've made your bed and all the pictures you want. I use it to make tents, because with a pair of shears it comes down REALLY fast in the morning, so you can be on your way at sunrise.
But more importantluy, with villager trading, wool has quite rightfully become a cash crop. You can produce it in larger quantities than you can use yourself, and villagers are willing to pay for it. A large flock of sheep makes for a wealthy player (well, along with sources of the other things they buy).

Still think sheep should drop leather too. I feel annoyed that all we can extract from them is wool.
Giving leather to pigs is, to me at least, silly; they already are full-on food providers. Making Cows leather-biased would be ideal.. but still, there's little incentive to keep more than one or two sheep for a player. Wool is used in beds.. and pictures. Big whoop. If they also dropped leather, than overbreeding and slaughtering makes perfect sense. There's incentive to actually keep sheep. And considering sheepskin was used for centuries in book manufacturing, as parchment or covering; why the nether not?
Sheep differ from the other domesticable animals in that their item drop doesn't require you to kill them (and in fact incentivizes you not to), and it regenerates over time. This allows you to get what you need from them with only a few individual animals and minimal effort. For this reason there is already plenty of incentive for players to keep them, and in lesser numbers than the other animals. Wool can be used for a great many other things besides just beds and paintings; some people build structures with it for a variation in color, or use it as carpeting, or even craft statues with it.
No, I think sheep are already well balanced and fill their role quite nicely. The problem lies entirely with cows.
I support this, I have never used leather armor. I made a leather cap once when I was too bored to mine, but I wore it with the rest being iron, so it doesn't really count.

When will Minecraft stop updating? When pigs fly over the frozen plains of hell, twice in a blue moon, while Taylor Swift sings a song called, "Maybe I'm the Problem".
You're so damn right about leather armory being damn hard to craft.
I mean, you just killed a whole cow that's a lot of leather.
Maybe cows should drop Cow hide or something like that, and you craft it into, like, 6 leather pieces
I do support this. In almost my entire time playing minecraft, I can only recall making leather armor a handful amount of times (mainly where I played around with old alpha versions of the game). Ever since I've bought the game (1.8 and later releases), I have never once made leather armor, I have always skipped straight ahead to iron armor. It's incredibly easy to come across, just find a cave and usually you'll have an abundant supply of iron. Leather on the other hand, requires I build a wheat farm, breed some cows, slaughter them, find I only get about 6-8 pieces of leather, and repeat this all over again.
I think the problem lies in 2 areas. One of course being the drop rate. From what I've experienced, cows often will drop more raw beef than leather, which makes it much more difficult to acquire. I think perhaps changing drop rates, and switching to more leather being dropped will help fix this. Not only will I have enough for leather armor to start out with, later on I'll have plenty to make books with, and possibly a small collection of bookshelves to build with.
The other I think lies in ore distribution, where iron seems to be easy to obtain, as it doesn't take much searching for me, usually, to find a cave system. But that's going off topic lol.
Anyway, I did kind of like that idea about cows dropping a "cow hide" item, where you could craft it into pieces of leather. That would be rather cool to see implemented into the game.
It's plain silly making a pig drop more meat than a cow. I mean: look at their sizes. Instead, look at other options:
As I said in previous page, breeding pigs with seeds instead would already give us a reason to farm them; OR
Make cooked steak regenerate less hunger and saturation than cooked porkchop; OR
Give 2-3 piglets each time you breed a pair of pigs, not just one; OR
A combination of those above.
It's not necessary to make everything in Minecraft an exact parallel of reality. Pigs can provide more meat in the name of balancing the game.
However, if we were to implement a similar change, I would instead suggest using the corrected item drop rates I suggested, and then changing the porkchop's hunger restoration to a lower level. The steak would then be the rarer 'higher-end' food item, and porkchops would be 'lower-end,' to compensate for their greater abundance. If you need a logical reason to justify it (an impulse I well understand ), then consider the steak obtained from cows as being a limited 'choice cut' part of the cow, and the porkchops to be of a standard-quality. That could be why cows provide less meat than pigs. After all, in reality, porkchops are generally smaller than steak, less expensive, and considered to be less of a luxury.
There is always the option of making iron armor harder to craft. Iron armor has been over powered ever since armor was buffed. If you really wanted to make iron armor harder to get. Require it to first require chain mail. Doing that would make leather much, much more attractive as an armor option and a bit more realistic. To get chain mail you need a real blacksmith from a village.
There is also the option of making cow herds spawn bigger And having huge cow herds spawn in the grassland biome.
I really don't think the solution is to make iron armor harder to obtain, but rather to make the leather resource much easier to obtain. There is just no reason for leather to be even a semi-rare item. It should be a basic and common resource much like wood, saplings, seeds, etc.
If we don't need ink and quills for books, are they all blank? Does that mean bookshelves are filled with empty books? Makes you wonder about enchanting table empowering...
Could be the books that COULD have been written, or the ones that were, or the ones that will...quantum bullcrap like that.
On topic, support. Certainly makes camo armor easier to make now that armor is dye able.
Mostly moved on. May check back a few times a year.

Making it your first "vehicle" on land.
But no, that's crazy.
....
My dreams have come true.

or -1 me with your mind. One of them is less frustrating.

I eat carrots, anyway

Maybe there should just be an anvil item that is made with three solid blocks of iron that you need to make all types of armor besides leather
