What if cauldrons served the purpose of letting people refill their potions for free and without limit?
Obviously it's not balanced for normal survival mode gameplay, but it could be useful in adventure maps and in sports where you want people to be able to refill their bottles as much as necessary, but not provide an unlimited number of potions.
For example, you might have an adventure map where the player only has one bottle and can refill it at safehouses in a dungeon.
Here's what I suggestion. In Creative Mode, right clicking on a cauldron opens up a GUI that lets you select any potion in the game. This instantly fills up the cauldron and tints the liquid the color of that potion.
From then on players can right click on the cauldron with empty bottles to instantly refill them with that potion. No matter how often they click the cauldron nevers runs out. Only splash potions would be able to go in splash potion bottles, and vice versa, so you don't need to worry about someone getting splash potion refills if you only want regular potion refills.
I think this would be very useful for map makers and server owners.
No. Dinnerbone would have to change too many things. He would have to remove the crafting recipe from survival which would make it impossible to obtain potions. He would have to program the infinite potion thing. And there are just too many problems this would cause.

Why would he have to remove the crafting recipe for potions? It's not either-or.
And yes, Dinnerbone would have to program it. But it's not really that complex.

Do you have an idea on what we could do? Would adding a separate cauldron be better? How would this make it impossible to obtain potions in survival?
Anyways, the idea is very good. I always thought the adventure mode is a great idea.
If you want to make safehouses with potion refills, put a chest full of potions there, instead of breaking the potion system.

Sure, you could put twenty potions in a chest. But then people can take them all at once. This allows you to use how many bottles they have to limit how much potion power they can pack.
Limiting ammo and upgrades is a major part of game design. For example, in Left 4 Dead players can have one throwable object at a time. They can't just collect each one they come across and build up an inventory of 90 Pipe Bombs. That limit keeps the game from being too easy.

I'm assuming you mean the crafting recipe for the cauldron would have to be removed, right? I think there's a misunderstanding at play here.
The way I understand the suggestion is that when playing in Survival cauldrons would act exactly the same as they do now. That means you still couldn't put potions in them; cauldrons are still only able to be filled with water. Therefore, there is no way to obtain the Infinite Potion Cauldron in Survival mode.
You could only fill a cauldron with potion in Creative mode.

(Emphasis mine.)
It's for Adventure Map builders. The potion system in Survival would remain 100% unchanged.
You're entirely right TwistedNerve. The idea is to allow people in Creative Mode to create infinite potion springs for players to refill their bottles with.
Infinite potion springs would not be creatable in survival or adventure mode. And the potion brewing system would not be changed whatsoever.
