It is my personal opinion that the addition of leather to the book recipe serves no purpose other than an attempt to add realism and is actually quite malicious since it prevents mass production of bookshelves.
as someone who like building large libraries this change has significantly impacted my enjoyment of the game. to be honest i don't mind the recipe change but i do mind that the recipe yield and the number of leathers dropped per cow haven't been altered to compensate for the relative rarity of the item as well as the excessive amount of books needed for making a bookshelves.
Please fix this abortion of game mechanics and give us more leather or books :/
I think Leather should be added to the book and quill recipe, rather than books. I hate having to kill off my cows just to make books. But, +1 support.
If cows drop more leather - That's the solution. Or just make a large field enclosed in fences with gates, use a 3rd-party editor to make the game creative mode, spawn a bunch of cows in it, give them all wheat, and use the editor to change it back to survival, and every so often feed the cows all wheat, and kill all the adults. If it's multiplayer this will not work. And it's crude...
Why did nobody care before that leather armour is harder to get than iron, but now complain because books require leather to craft? I wish they could fix leather armour being hard to get and make it easy to get, but make leather itself still be difficult to get and be used in books. Books should be this hard to get because they unlock enchantments and enchantments should be this difficult to get, but leather armour, being very weak, should be easy to find.
Why are there at least 3 threads on leather on the front page?

Anyway, on topic: The leather drop from cows should be buffed to be consistent and higher(probably 1-4), and the meat drop should be reduced to 0-1 or 0-2.
it s horrible even with a cow farm and hunting for cows with my +3 looting diamond sword I only managed to make like 2 stacks of book cases which IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH for my massive library that has multiple levels.
honestly its such a hassle now...this is not making the game challenging it just makes it tedious, challenge is when you need a blazer rod for alchemy/ender eyes/ender chests.....etc, and not when you need to kill 100000000+ cows to make 20 book cases
