It should be cool if we can have the possibility to use little blocks for redstone without mod.
Else, having new "logic gate block" to save a lot of place to build computer or thing like this could be interesting. For exemple the AND OR, exclusive OR, T bascule (I'm not sure if we say it like this in english). Like this, 21 blocks for T bascule would be replaced by only 1 block. An 8 bits counter could be built with only 8 blocks instead of hundred blocks.
How about, just one block for all logic gates like that?
It could be simply called an ''IC'', and when right-clicked, a menu opens up displaying a selection menu where you can select what type of gate it is. The 4 sides of the block is for each input/output, both the X+ and the Z+ are for the input(s), the X- and Z- for the output(s). This would be nice for simple NOT gates with 2 outputs, or AND/OR gates with 2 outputs. But if it doesn't have an input that is needed, that input is counted as an ''off'' signal. Also, the faces of the block should have little labels on each side showing what IN or OUT that side is (like, IN1, IN2, OUT1, and OUT2).
eh?
An interesting idea would be this: if you right-click on a surface you can place redstone on with redstone out, it opens an 8x8(or 4x4 for a clearer image) interface with a grid similar to the inventory, and from there, you can place redstone within that grid as you normally would in the game-world. When you exit the menu, it places said redstone in the configuration you chose on top of that block (with appropriate graphics, so you can simply look at the block and tell the configuration at a glance). The best way to describe this would be like the hacking pipe-game in Bioshock, with the ability to rotate sections, and there would have to be the possibility of creating an entrance/exit flow for each block on the edge, so it can connect to other blocks.This allows for the same puzzle-solving mindset required with redstone, while simply shrinking the entire configuration to a more manage-able size.
Eh, looking at the top of a block and seeing what looks a lot like the cobwebs, but it's red-ish and glows randomly, may cause complications, and make even small circuits hard to debug. On the other hand, having some 1-block-sized ''IC's'' that can be placed in different places, with 2 INs and 2 OUTs, and an identifier for the type of gate on the top, would be easier, and simpler. The way redstone is currently, seems too big when making complex circuits, so making all of those really big gates into simple blocks would make iteasier to manage, but not so small that you can't see what is what.
In the mesecons mod for Minetest, one of the developers/contributors made a simple AND block that works just like an AND gate. If it's possible in a game as simple as Minetest, there should be no reason for it to not be possible with Java.
I have an idea for crafting (this is in 3x3 xxx xxx xxx format):
[R][W][R]
[W][S][W]
[R][W][R]
where R = redstone torch.
W = redstone dust,
S = block of iron.
eh?
