You'll be able to use command blocks to target specific players, a random player (@r), the nearest player (@p), or all players (@a).
But what if you want to be able to target a specific player without knowing their name?
Let me suggest six new player targeting parameters:
@ri, @pi, @ai item
Targets only players carrying that item in their inventory. For example, you could enter @pi emerald and it would target the nearest player with one or more emeralds in their inventory. The other options would select a random player with that item, or all players with that item.
The idea is that you could select rare items to serve as keys, and target just players possessing the correct item.

@rh, @ph, @ah item
Targets only players holding that item in their hands. For example, you could enter @ph emerald and it would target the nearest player holding an emerald. The other options would select a random player holding that item, or all players holding that item.
Mostly it would be useful for teleporting players and rewarding players, using the give, xp, and tp commands.
For example, you could have a scavenger hunt where only people who can collect a specific item in time receive items or xp.
It also lets items be used as portkeys. For example, you can make it so that the second someone holds an ender dragon egg they're teleported somewhere else. A command block somewhere could be hooked to a redstone clock that powers it every other second to instantly whisk away players who collect a rare item or one of a kind key.'
It also could be used as a easy transportation system. For example, you could have teleportation stations set around the map. Hold one of a few different items to select from a list of destinations, then press a button to power the command block, and you're teleported away.
Really good idea, easpecially with the adventure stuff coming soon. By checking for things in hand you could make it so that a certain item could be a key to a door way, or maybe cursed with insane ramblings. It could also be used to reset the enderdragon on multiplayer servers so multiple people can fight it repeatedly. I also like the wearing idea as well, and would like to also suggest a range setting. For instance you could set it so that all players wearing diamond armor within 100 blocks are effected or only the nearest player holding a golden apple withing 5 blocks is effected. If that was part of it I am sorry but I missed it.
