I thought of maybe adding staffs to Minecraft as an idea. It would work like you have to make the staff out of sticks and a diamond (maybe other gems as well if they add them in) in a forward slash angle way with the diamond at the top right corner and a stick in the middle slot and the last stick in the bottom left slot. Then you could enchant them to do different enchantments like fire. It would help but it might make Minecraft more complex. I don't know but send in your ideas for staffs and whatnot as a comment.
Do you mean staffs as a weapon (as in two-handed quarterstaff, which would actually interest me) or as wizard's staff, for casting spell effects? The recipe you describe would work for a diamond spear (that could be enchanted to return after it is thrown).
a staff as a melee weapon would be cool but I was thinking like a wizard's staff which would shoot special effects like fire or electricity at any mob you're looking at directly. Maybe there could be a splash effect which comes with a larger enchantment level that effects multiple mobs.
Spells or weapon? Either way, no. We don't need new weapons unless it has a special, unique use.
I know but maybe there could be a special use (eventually) with staffs. Maybe there could be a staff which contributes towards something like a temple or whatever that Mojang may (not saying they will) add in a further update if they add staffs too. Like you have to place the staff or do something with it in the special temple. Just an idea.

like in indiana jones and the raiders of the lost arc.
Quarterstaff: 3 logs diagonally; hits as well as a wooden sword, but has the number of uses of an iron one
and
Ironshod staff: iron, log, iron diagonally; hits as hard as an iron sword, with half again as many uses.
I would be using logs rather than sticks so that you could cut the staff out of the hardest straightest wood of the piece. The rest would end up as trash. These would be weapons after all, rather than walking sticks.
I tried doing up magic staves like you were thinking, but they turned out to be like giving yourself a hundred potions in only one stack slot.
Fire charges in a weapon! Sweet. I think it's cool, could be fun with multiplayer role playing and using the invasion mod.
Staves go zap zap!
Diamond.

ALSO a wand wouldn't be able to be shot out of dispensers in the way that a potion is
I was thinking about thrown potions for damage, Harm and Heal Undead
For magic staves I was thinking:
Enchanted Gem: put gem on enchantment table and it gets enchantment depending on type:
Diamonds: direct damage
Emeralds: debuffs
Lapis: buffs and heals
then craft quarterstaff and enchanted gem for magic staff
number of magic uses is equal to uses on staff. left click to attack, right click to cast spell.
The poster after you got me thinking about not tying the spells to the staff, you get the number of uses based on the enchantment, but it still 'uses' up the mundane uses of the staff as well.
i think the magic staff should do nothing until you enchant it and then what it does is based on the enchantment you get such as shooting fire shooting lightning etc, i also think the recipie should be more nether/end orientated perhaps requiring glowstone and endstone to make. this way they would be a "high tech" weapon meaning you need to have got to the end and you need to have a fair amount of xp to make the staffs useful.
under this system various effects could include:
shooting blaze fireballs
shooting ghast fireballs
shooting lightning
shooting poison bolts
temporary invulnerability (prehaps with a negitive effect too such as nausea)
super jump
summon pet zombie or skeleton that fights for you (lasts limited time)
That is what I thought of first and great ideas for enchantments. Those spawn zombies and skeletons could really help in the heat of battle.
This has potential. a fully enchantable weapon, with effects of throwing fireballs and other elemental abilities will allow for roleplay and the most crude of classes, while quarterstaves (Non-enchanted) will be a good weaapon for a slightly longer range.
Yeah there could be regular quarterstaff you can make and they act like a melee weapon until you enchant them. Great idea. Also everyone keep sending in more enchantment ideas. Don't make it too ridiculous though. XD

well....
potions have their own use...
He ment fire balls and lighting
I'm 99.99% sure that potions can't do that.
