While playing on a factions server not too long ago, I came across a realization.
No matter how well constructed a base may be, there is only one way to make it completely impregnable. You must build it entirely of obsidian, which TNT will not destroy. As long as the rules of the server dictate that players cannot destroy or place blocks on other player's territory, there is no way to get into a base entirely built of obsidian. The instant you put a door or a window into a base like that, though, it becomes vulnerable. A well placed TNT cannon can take out a door or a window, easy.
How great would it be, then, to have the ability to craft obsidian into a door or even a block of glass. Obsidian is a type of stone, so an Obsidian window sounds strange, but it would be neat to be able to craft a semi-transparent purple block. It could be called "Bulletproof Glass" or something. It would allow less light in than a regular glass block or pane and would cast a purple color over everything viewed through it, but it would have the same explosion resistance as Obsidian. An obsidian door could have the exact same properties as an Iron door, but have a higher explosion resistance.
I'm not sure how this would effect gameplay on a factions server, since the whole point is to be able to raid other teams, but thinking from a purely defensive standpoint, this seems like an awesome idea to me.
Let me know if anyone has thought of this too or even of other ideas that involve crafting with Obsidian.

Go on...

NOPE!
Think outside the box. Coating it in water will do just fine.
As long as the rules of the server dictate that players cannot destroy or place blocks on other player's territory, there is no way to get into a base entirely built of obsidian.
That is true. Through no indirect means can obsidian be destroyed.
The instant you put a door or a window into a base like that, though, it becomes vulnerable. A well placed TNT cannon can take out a door or a window, easy.
That's why you cover it in water.
How great would it be, then, to have the ability to craft obsidian into a door or even a block of glass.
Sure, let's make a door out of shards of obsidian.
And obsidian IS a glass.
Obsidian is a type of stone, Really? REALLY?
A simple Wikipedia search on "obsidian" would only have taken 10 seconds.
...so an Obsidian window sounds strange,
Yes, yes it does, if you're thinking it's stone.
...but it would be neat to be able to craft a semi-transparent purple block.
Sure. The Portal block is a semi-transparent purple block, but it's noisy as hell.
But another block like that could be awesome.
It could be called "Bulletproof Glass" or something.
Bulletproof glass is made of polycarbonate, thermoplastic, and laminated glass.
Not shards of a volcanic glass glued together.
Also, there's no bullets in Minecraft.
It would allow less light in than a regular glass block or pane and would cast a purple color over everything viewed through it, but it would have the same explosion resistance as Obsidian.
Minecraft currently does not have the technology to make colored lighting.
An obsidian door could have the exact same properties as an Iron door, but have a higher explosion resistance.
If it has exact same properties as an iron door, then it needs a redstone signal to open.
And you are allowed to activate buttons, levers, pressure plates, whatever in other people's territory.
So yeah, your idea is completely redundant.
I'm not sure how this would effect gameplay on a factions server, since the whole point is to be able to raid other teams, but thinking from a purely defensive standpoint, this seems like an awesome idea to me.
Yeah, since vanilla SMP servers all have Factions Bukkit plugin in them.
Let me know if anyone has thought of this too or even of other ideas that involve crafting with Obsidian.
Hmm.... How about a Portal crafted with obsidian?
It would kinda be like a hell dimension, and it would be called the "Nether" or something.
But seriously though, this idea isn't that good. Sorry about that.

Ah. I didn't know it had been suggested before. Thanks.
