Minecraft zombies are a bit of a joke. They're slow, week and stupid. this would make
them something to befeared. The sound of a zombie's voice in a cave would be a cause
for alarm, something that would send even a fairly well-equiped miner scrambling to the surface
and barricading the doors rather than "Oooh! Free EXP!"
Zombies are currently the weakest and least inteligent mobs in pretty much every way. They're slow, weak
and practicaly defenseless. They're a joke. First of all, they should be way more resilient, being, you know,
already dead and mindless. In fact, seeing how slow and stupid they are, they deserve a good 20 hearts.
They should always spawn in large groups of about 10-18. They would not take knockback from arrows.
If they catch you, they would do a sort of "hugging" animation, and if you don't get away before the animation completes, you will be grabbed and held in place. 1 zombie slows you to half speed and 2 stops you completely.
To make a normal house less overpowered against them, they could detect the player from 40 blocks away and through walls. They would actively attack doors if the player is anywhere nearby. Because of all the added threats, they should spawn more rarely.
Basicaly, zombies should be something to be run from, not to be fought.
They are currently the exact opposite of that.
EDIT: thanks to Ike for bringing up the matter of villages. I'll try to balance this out. Hordes would not spawn in range of villages. For zombie seiges, a different kind of zombie would be used: The infector.
It would be the only zombie that can infect villagers, and would be jsut like the current zombies, but with blue skin. To explain the mythos behind this, let's try this. Zobies send in infectors because only infectors can transmit the zombie virus succesfully without killing the villager. Simple but elegant.
Umm. No. They are already a huge pain in the ass when you're trying to defend villagers.
Notice how I said they would be much rarer. Your village wouldn't be under attack every few nights.
You could probably get a wall up around your village before they invade.
They are mobs for new players to test their skills on.
They are not elite supersoldiers. I think they are fine with 2 armor points. They can break doors down, and are quite annoying.

NO. First, they have a few abilities that make them unique: bashing down doors and seeing you through windows. They are not stupid, since they have path finding AI. They have 10 hearts, the same as the player, which makes sense, they are dead players. They are immune to poison, deadly in hordes and can wear armour and wield weapons. They are not the weakest mob: The spider is weaker both in attack strength and health. They are not meant to be fast, they are dead. The only thing I agree with is that they should spawn in larger groups, perhaps of 3-6. (As small as it sounds, it is pretty hard to keep back 6 zombies without one of them catching up to you, distracting you and as a result giving the rest enough time to catch up.
If you disagree with any of this, please tell me in case I have made a mistake.
I agree with this one, especially seeing in caves if you are down exploring a zombie can actually creep up on you quite fast if you aren't paying attention. Also not to mention when you combine the zombie with a group of skeletons spiders and creepers in a cave, you find yourself running away from the. So yeah zombies are just right how they are, besides not spawning in larger groups above ground.

yeah, it's SO HARD to walk backwards 16 blocks, causing them to forget about you and wander around stupidly as if they have no idea what to do next.
