This idea came from one person, and the community is made of millions. I would truly appreciate criticisms on any part of this.
Section 1: Mobs
Part 1: The Overworld
The Overworld is full of hostile mobs, and you're bound to run into them while playing. Minecraft's hostile mobs, however, are easy to outsmart and kill. The Adventure Update made this less of a problem, and the AI Update, as I refer to it, made it even less of a problem. However, the problem is still there. This part will be split into sections for each hostile mob. Each of the sections will show how I think the mobs could be updated to make combat much more interesting.
Part 1A: Zombies In game, zombies are the simplest and, in my opinion, the easiest mobs to go against. Zombies are not even a threat for most players, and they, again, in my opinion, need an overhaul.
Zombies currently:
Are slower than the player, making it easy to outrun them if the player does not wish to fight.
Are melee only, giving a huge advantage to a player who has a bow.
Make no attempt to dodge the players sword or arrows.
Have no special abilities, unlikes some other mobs.
At sunrise, find shade/water.
Make no attempt to hide from the player for any reason.
Zombies could:
Have 2 ranges in their code: Attack range, and sprint range. Only the attack range, however, will be active when they are not aggravated. Once a player enters this attack range, the zombie will become aggravated, and attack, like in current Minecraft. However, upon leaving this attack range, the player will enter the sprint range, in which the zombie will sprint slightly slower than the player's sprint, making it harder to run from zombies in a fight.
Be melee only at close range, like normal, but at further distances, be able to spit at the player for small amounts of damage, and, on harder difficulties, poison.
Regain health from biting (meleeing) the player.
Let out "battle moans" during a fight, which could spawn zombies nearby/make zombies' attack ranges greater, therefore making nearby zombies attack the player too.
With these changes implemented, zombies would no longer be as easy as they currently are.
Part 1B: Skeletons In the game, skeletons are harder to fight then zombies, as they are ranged. However, they still are relatively easy to fight, and kill. They are also hunted for their valuble drop (bones), which means they deserve a bit more of a difficulty boost than zombies, in my opinion.
Skeletons currently:
Have their trusty bow and arrows as their only weapon. The bow has unlimited uses, and infinite arrows.
Are basically ranged zombies, as neither have any special abilities, or do..anything but charge at you mindlessly, for that matter.
Walk towards the player at at further distances, and at smaller, circle the player. However, they always circle in the same direction, and this makes for an easy way to predict a skeleton's movement.
Have a chance of spawning with a spider as a mount.
Skeletons could:
Have limited arrows. Once arrows run out, the skeleton will find in-range arrows that are in the ground/all that are reachable, and collect them.
Spawn with a random, semi-rare intention of walking towards a spider. The skeleton will mount upon contact.
Have infinite air underwater. Skeletons lack lungs that fill up with water, unlike..pretty much everything else.
With these features implemented, skeletons will be quite different, and more realistic.
Part 1C: Creepers The infamous creeper, blowing up your stuff since you hit the "create world" button. These nasty pieces of work have something only 3 other mobs, in my opinion, have - A legitimate factor of fear. If there was a zombie or a skeleton outside my door, I'd go out and fight it. If there was a creeper, I would stay far away from that door. For this reason, I haven't included major changes to this mob, as they're already pretty scary as heck.
Creepers currently:
Explode when player is within range, making a moderate crater, and doing moderate to severe damage to you, depending on difficulty. The creeper has no other attacks.
Do not burn or become neutral in daylight - They will still attack full-force.
Are considered by many to be the worst mob in the game.
Creepers could:
Explode upon death only.
Use their heads as a melee weapon, smashing it into you for a good amount of damage, but also causing damage to the creeper.
I tried to add new ideas to the creeper without taking away the fear factor Notch gave it - I may have even increased it.
Part 1D: Spiders I'm going to be honest and say that Minecraft gave me arachnophobia. These spiders are already hard to hit with arrows and swords, they're fast, and they're, in my opinion, the worst mob. I'm not going to include many ideas to the spider because I think they're already horrifying.
Spiders currently:
Jump attack you, making them hard to hit unlike other mobs.
Do not burn in sunlight, but they won't attack you, either.
Are 2 blocks wide, making them not able to fit in 1x2 doorways.
Climb walls. This actually suffocates the skeleton (If there is one riding the spider) if the spider goes up a wall and hits a ledge.
Spiders could:
Turn to fit the wall while climbing, so they are always flat against it. This fixes the problem of the skeleton suffocating.
Can climb on roofs, and, if a player is below, drop and smash into the player, doing moderate damage. Fall damage may kill the spider. If the spider lives, it attacks like normal.
As of posting this, I've only done the 4 main overworld mobs, and not the other mobs or functions I plan, mainly because I fear this post won't even pick up many views, and I don't want to waste time. I've written down all my ideas, including "Engragement Mode" and paralysis.
This is a good thread, but a few minor suggestions, a skeleton shouldn't have a bow with durability, it would not have a chance to break without being killed, unless it had very low durability, and if they ran out of arrows, they could just come up to you to attack you, like you said they would do a melee attack with their arms, everything else is good, just the skeletons shouldn't have durability on their bows.
In my opinion, they don't improve the game at all. I rather see the zombies and skeletons, not burn during the sunlight.
I think somebody suggested the idea to Dinnerbone and it was replied to with a sort of "Maybe in hard." Don't quote me on this, might've been something else.

This are great ideas, and you have my support but there is a single flaw in the plan.
Creepers explode on deathThis would make them even more dangerous as you can't kill it without wrecking your house. It also makes harvesting gunpowder almost impossible.
I think in the next update when zombies wield weapons they have that extra damage the weapon does... I'm not sure. But the best form for zombies would be in large packs. That is when they're the most dangerous so having them spawn more frequently in larger packs would make them a bit more challenging. The spitting thing is neat, but should have a limited range of like 5-7 blocks maybe.
I like the chance that a skeleton will ride a spider if one is nearby. It might also be good for skeleton's AI if they try to walk away from the Player while shooting arrows instead of just standing there like a derp. Perhaps they could also track a higher vantage point while keeping the player in its line of sight.
I do believe that both zombies and skeletons shouldn't drown to death seeing how they're both undead to begin with.
I think we can leave the creeper alone for the most part. They're suicidal ninjas and having them detonate upon death would cause a lot of grief.
Personally, I probably wouldn't ride a spider even if it was actually implemented. The very thought gives me the shivers... ugh lol. Spiders already drop down from high places to attack players but if you mean some extra damage, then maybe. I think they should't suffer too much fall damage and that they can safely fall from up to 6 blocks high. Baby spider is interesting but I'm not so sure about it.
Creepers used to explode on death, but it was removed for causing unavoidable explosions. The change made creepers more dangerous, and less unfair.
Well, seeing as they do melee damage if my ideas are implemented, wouldn't they act like zombies until you could bring them outside and kill them in the water?

I actually started going off track here, and I need to make it include only combat changes, so I'll get to that. I agree with you though.
